Joe H. Welborn was born in Newberry, and is a graduate of Newberry High School and the Cincinnati College of Embalming, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Upon completion of mortuary college Joe was employed as a funeral director and embalmer at McSwain Funeral Home. He later went to work for the Newberry Post Office from which he retired. After retirement from the Post Office Joe began part-time employment with the firm in 1996.  Joe no longer works for the firm on a regular basis, but with his vast history with the firm that spans practically his entire life McSwain-Evans Funeral Home still considers him a part of the team.  Today he continues to work with stained glass and over the years through his talent has reproduced numerous historical buildings of Newberry County. He also has written a book on the history of the American Legion and is a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church. He is married to Sal Cochcroft Welborn.
