Eddie Shealy PDF Print E-mail

James Edward “Eddie” Shealy, 58, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at his home surrounded by family, friends and students.

Eddie was born on April 26, 1959 in Newberry to Frances Jean Roland Shealy and Milton Eugene Shealy. He attended Newberry schools graduating from Newberry High School in 1977. During his high school career Eddie learned early on his gift for music and band under the direction of his mentor, Lorraine Paris. Eddie then attended Newberry College obtaining a BA degree in Music Education in 1981. Eddie also was a member of the Spirit of America band for several years, which offered him the opportunity to travel and perform in Europe and across America. This was a world class band Eddie was chosen for from strict auditions and recommendations.

His band career began in Abbeville, SC. After one year with Abbeville, Eddie moved to Charleston where he taught at Middleton High School and West Ashley High School for the next 32 years. Following retirement, Eddie has continued to work with the Hananhan Marching Band and other local high school and college bands.

The influence Eddie had on thousands of students and co-workers is his legacy and words can never measure what gifts he has left behind. Eddie mentored his students to follow their dreams, get the education they needed, reach beyond what they thought they were capable of accomplishing.

Eddie is survived by his father, a sister, Kathy (Virgil) Buchanan and his pride and joy, his nephew, Thad Buchanan. His step-mother, Nettie Shealy, step-siblings, Wendy (Tommy) Willingham, David McCullough and Sherry Davis. Also, step-nephews, Brandon Willingham, Cory, Garrett and Dawson Davis. He is also survived by extended family.

Eddie was predeceased by his older brother, Kenneth Eugene Shealy and grandparents, Eugene and Gladys Shealy, and Jim and Bertha Roland.

A Memorial Service conducted by Rev. Leon Rawl and Rev. Floyd Sides will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 4:00 pm at Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church located at 1307 Drayton Street, Newberry, SC.

All former students and co-workers will be honorary pall bearers.

Following the worship service friends may visit with the family in the Fellowship Hall. There will be a private burial at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church or to the Ruth Pugh Foundation – PO Box 856, Newberry, SC 29108. This foundation supports the Newberry Disability and Special Needs Board programs in Newberry County.

The family will be at the home of Milton and Nettie Shealy, 201 Crosson Street, Newberry.

It was with great sadness to hear of Mr. Shealy's passing. He was band director at Middleton High the 4 years my son Michael was in band. He loved Mr. Shealy and spoke of him often after graduating and moving to Florida he would come home and go to football games and talk with Mr. Shealy. Michael passed away august 27 in Kissimmee Fl of complications from pneumonia at age 43 we feel Michael welcomed Mr. Shealy home to heaven because he would have loved to see him once again. May they both rest in peace and share many memories. He was a remarkably talented man and loved by all his many students.

My children have only known the kindness of Mr. Shealy for the past three years, here in Hanahan. However, there could not have been a better person to show kindness and love to both of my children. I can only hope their impact to their community, and to music, is a percentage of what Eddie gave to so many for so long.

To the family, thank you for sharing him with the lowcountry, and so many others. My children will always appreciate him. To paraphrase one of our marching band mothers, "Isn't it a wonderful feeling to know that someone else loves your children as much as you do."

Teacher, friend, confidant, laughing partner. Just a few of the many adjectives to describe Eddie Shealy. Eddie touch countless lives and used his own version of tough love that left a lasting impact on so many (this one included).

I was always so happy to see him at the band competitions because I knew he was doing what his heart wanted him to do. He will forever be in my heart. God bless and keep you all in the day ahead.

We were so sorry to hear about Eddie's passing. There never seems to be the right words that effectively say how we feel. Kathy, you probably remember that Eddie & I were in the same class in school and also in Sunday School. Due to that I have a lot of good memories of him. I thank the Lord that I was able to call Eddie & talk to him one more time before he passed. We had a good conversation, & I am thankful for that. On the other hand, Mike wasn't fortunate to know him, but he did know Mr. Milton & Kathy. We pray that God will comfort & give you strength in the coming days as you grieve the loss of Eddie. Praying for you.Love, Mike & Risa Cromer
