Wiss Wilford Moates, 86, of Pomaria, widower of Alberta Wicker Moates, died Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at his residence.
Born on March 18, 1934, in Newberry County, he was the son of Thomas Walter and Sara Alice Franklin Moates. He served in the South Carolina National Guard and was retired from the Mid Carolina Country Club where he served as the first grounds superintendent. Mr. Moates was also a farmer. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he had served on the Church Council and had been a former Luther League Advisor.
Mr. Moates is survived by daughters, Phyllis (Henry) Jackson and Connie (Keith) Pearson both of Pomaria; grandchildren, Jesse (Haley) Pearson, Shanna (Andy) Gallman and Brandi (Josh) Corley and great-grandchildren, Taryn Gallman, Brooks Gallman, Katelyn Pearson, Tyler Pearson, Jacob Brown, Havan Brown, Noah Moates, Alleigh Corley and Ember Corley. He was predeceased by a sister, Delene Cannon.
Due to COVID 19 a private family graveside will be held at 4:00 pm Thursday, January 21, 2021, at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, 2496 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, SC 29126. Friends may sign the register book and view Mr. Moates Thursday between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.

What a blessing that your loved one is suffering no more and gone to his eternal home to join his wonderful wife. She had to rejoice when he joined her. What a reunion that must’ve been! Wilford's death--He was a special part of our family and he will be missed. sending prayers for comfort now and in the days going forward. i think about all the memories of him and my late husband rogers hunting adventures. i know he is rejoicing with Mrs. Alberta and everyone that has gone before him. love to you all
