J. Steve Rister, 67, of Newberry died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on July 17, 1942, in Newberry, he was the son of the late Julius B. and Louise Schumpert Rister. He was retired from Kibler’s Inc. and was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, and in his younger years, racing dirt track race cars.

Mr. Rister is survived by his wife, Evelyn Bowers Rister; a daughter, Karen Butler and her husband Billy of Newberry; a son, Doug Rister and his wife Dawn of Chapin; five grandchildren, Amanda and Cody Butler and Taylor, Tucker, and Cooper Rister; and special friends, Willie and Marie Johnson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Mary Havens. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church, 1307 Drayton Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the American Cancer Society c/o Mrs. Helen Beebe, 181 Tailers Trail, Leesville, SC 29072.

Active pall bearers will be  Patrick Bowers, Brent Bodie, T.C. Bowers, Larry Hall, Kevin Minick, Blair Long, Keith Minick, and Brian Beck.

Honorary pall bearers will be past and present employees of Kibler’s, Inc.

My deepest sympathy to you all. Nothing can be said to comfort or console you at this time- all of you are held in the love granted and shared by God. I didn't know Mr. Steve well. but I saw the products of his greatness as a man- his family.Blessings on all of you.

Mr. Steve is now riding in the racecar of life on that heavenly track. I remember going as a kid to Newberry and watching Mr. Steve and I always pulled for him because he was my hero. God Bless each and everyone of you and know he is in a better place.
