James Summer Johnston, 74, of Pomaria, widower of Dianne Ruff Johnston, died Thursday, April 8, 2021 at his residence.

Born on August 20, 1946 in Newberry, he was a son of the late Arthur Middleton Johnston and Leola Summer Johnston Eargle. He was a graduate of Mid-Carolina High School and Columbia Commercial College. He served in the South Carolina National Guard and retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation after 30 years of service. He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as Treasurer of the Cemetery Committee and was a former member of the church council. Jimmy loved his family and enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting and taking long rides around Pomaria.

He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Ebert and her husband Mark of Chapin and Amanda Huffstetler and her husband Neil of Pomaria; a brother, William Johnston and his wife Nancy of Prosperity; grandchildren, Taylor Ebert, Lindsey Ebert, Ryan Ebert, Claire Ebert, Maddie Huffstetler, and Karlie Huffstetler; brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Cynthia Frick; nephews and nieces, Chris Johnston, Jamie Johnston and wife, Susan, Angela Piontek and her husband Greg, and Bonnie Frick and her husband Bradd Bunce.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, April 11, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church by the Rev. Mike Watson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 622 Hope Station Road, Pomaria, SC 29126 or to Pomaria Rescue Squad, 241 Holloway Street, Pomaria, SC 29126.

Active pall bearers will be, Chris Johnston, Jamie Johnston, Randy Summer, Steven Mathis, Greg Piontek, and Bradd Bunce.

Honorary pall bearers will be Dr. Carroll Pinner and staff of Pinner Clinic, the staff of Peak Pharmacy, the staff of Angel Care, Blake Fletcher, and Ron and Elsa Hope.

The family would like to thank the staff of Angel Care for their love and care.

Those attending the service and visitation are asked to follow the Covid-19 guidelines

I certainly remember Jimmy as a great coworker which trained me on various tests as a young technician while he was with DOT. He always had a joke and smile to make everyone’s day brighter. He will be greatly missed, may god bless him and his family.
