Betty Moore

Betty Jo McKinney Moore, 71, of Newberry, widow of Lewis Ray Moore, Sr., died Friday, December 26, 2008 at Lexington Medical Center.

Born on January 4, 1937 in Union, she was a daughter of the late George Lester and Vera Knox McKinney. She was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons, Gene R. McKinney of Chapin and Lewis Ray Moore, Jr. of Newport News, VA; daughters, Tanya Moore Barnette of Chapin, Cynthia Lynn Moore Meetze of Columbia and Kathy Renee Moore of Newberry; a sister, Mozelle Werts Stanley of Prosperity; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters, Edna Higgins and Jetty Wofford and a brother, Leonard Earl McKinney.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008, at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Ken Ferrell. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of South Carolina or the Newberry County Disabilities and Special Needs Board.

Mike Koon

Michael Eric Koon, 46, of Pomaria, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on January 23, 1962, he was a son of the late Eric Carson and Frances Carolyn Mitchell Koon. He was a diesel mechanic and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his sister, Kathy Brown of Pomaria; a brother, Carroll Koon of Irmo; nieces, Kim Holland, Kacee Fallaw and Kayla Fallaw; a nephew, Carson Koon; great nephews, Kevin Holland and Devin Holland; great nieces, D’Erica Holland, Carlie Eggleston and Gaia Eggleston.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the church. Lucy Berta Hutchinson, 87, of Newberry, died Monday, December 22, 2008 at White Oak Manor.

Born on October 9, 1921 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Eugene and Lucy Hughey Hutchinson. Miss Hutchinson was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving is a sister, Harriett H. Tindal of Florence.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. James C. Brown III.

Doyle Eston Smith, 69, of Newberry, died Monday, December 22, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on April 21, 1939 in Newberry, he was a son of the late Eston K. and Margaret Smith. He was a former employee of Pet Dairy, a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church and a US Air Force veteran.

Surviving are his son, Doug Smith; daughters, Debbie Creech and Lynn Duke; a sister, Sandra Cribari; brothers, Carl Smith, Howard Smith and Barry Smith and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008 at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Donald West. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association.

James "Pete" Gunn

James Richard “Pete” Gunn, 66, of Newberry, widower of Mary Ann Nelson Gunn, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on June 16, 1942 in Lowell, IN, he was a son of Anne M. Arseaul Gunn and the late Francis J.. He was retired from West Frazier and was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Gunn was a member of the Newberry Moose Lodge # 2211 and the Moose Legion # 86 and the Newberry American Legion. He was a member of the Newberry Country Club Seniors Golf, Midlands Senior Golf and Central Seniors Golf. He was a Marine veteran.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Highlands, IN are his son, Jamie Gunn of Jacksonville, NC; a daughter, Teresa Chadwick of Jacksonville, NC; a brother, Billy Gunn of Highlands, IN; grandchildren, Kiauna Chadwick, Taliyah Chadwick and David Chadwick, Jr., his sister-in-law, June L. Nelson of Newberry and his dog, Baby. He was predeceased by a daughter, Angela Gunn and a sister, Ella Mae Haggins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Smyrna Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Scott Hill. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Helen Beebe, 181 Tailors Trail, Leesville, SC 29070.

Rosalyn Boland Cumalander, 76, of Little Mountain, widow of Paul “Nick” Cumalander died December 18, 2008 at her residence.

Born on June 17, 1932 in Little Mountain she was a daughter of Drucilla Lindler Boland and the late Dewey F. Boland. She was a graduate of Chapin High School. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a former church secretary, taught Sunday School and served on various church committees, and also was a member of the Happy Mountaineers. She retired as postmaster in Little Mountain.

She is survived in addition to her mother by daughters, Janet Kibler and husband Mark of Little Mountain, Mary Perry and husband Craig of Lexington, and Paula Frick and husband Marty of Little Mountain; a sister, Jane Ramsey and husband Don of Chapin; a brother, Kim Boland and wife Susan of Chapin; grandchildren, Whitney Kibler, Derrick Kibler, and Zachary Perry. She was predeceased by a sister, Linda Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Karl Suhr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Building fund, P.O. Ada Folk Mitchell

Ada Beam Folk Mitchell, 86, of Newberry, died Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

She was born on Nov. 1, 1922 in Chester to the late Jesse Franklin and Sunie Sanders Beam. Mrs. Mitchell was a former employee of the Market Basket and cared for children in her home. She was a member of Bethel A.R.P. Church of Winnsboro.

Surviving are her husband, George Aubrey Mitchell of Winnsboro; sons, Gene Folk of FL, Jimmy (Beth) Folk and Jesse (Gail) Folk both of Newberry; a daughter, Frances (Clyde) Brown of Newberry; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mitchell was predeceased by her first husband, James Bennie Folk, Sr. and brothers, Davis Beam and Martin “M.C.” Beam.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2008 at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Gregory Slater. Burial will follow in St. Philip’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Louise Gilliam

Mary Louise Doolittle Gilliam, 89, of Pomaria, widow of Thomas Moore Gilliam, died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at White Oak Manor.

She was born on December 8, 1919 in Plum Branch, SC to the late Jessie Joseph and Addie Brooks Doolittle. Mrs. Gilliam was reared by her aunt, Mamie Brooks Doolittle of Edgefield. She was a graduate of Consolidated High School in Plum Branch and was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son, Arnold Moore (Sandra) Gilliam of West Columbia; granddaughters, Celeste (Brad) Morgan of Lexington and Alice (Duke) McIver of West Columbia; a grandson, Sanford M. Gilliam of West Columbia; great-granddaughters, Lacee (Devon) Ashe, Grace Morgan and Maddie Rose Morgan all of Lexington, Mack McIver and Harley Mae McIver both of West Columbia; a great-great-grandson, Collin Ashe of Lexington. She was the last surviving sibling of eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church by the Rev. Marian Dyer. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 2442 Mt. Ardene Joyce
February 7, 1944 -

Mrs. Ardene “Dene” Joyce, 64, of Prosperity entered into rest on December 13, 2008 at Lexington Medical Center.

Dene was born February 7, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of the late Dorothy Baumhauer and the late Harold Baumhauer of St. Louis, MO. She graduated from Lindbergh High School in 1962, attended St. Louis Institute of Music and Washington University, St. Louis, MO. Dene was fortunate to have experienced living in various parts of the country, due to Roberts company transfers, learning new traditions and meeting new people. Her career was just as varied and fun. She sold real estate in St. Louis, was the church secretary in Iowa, distributed dolls houses and miniatures in Kansas City, sold football helmet decals in Illinois and last but not least was office manager of Water and Power Technologies, Columbia, SC, retiring in 2004. She was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Prosperity and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Dene’s passions were gardening, sewing, doing things with her daughter, and having her grandson over to spend the night, their adventures were endless…

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Robert G. Joyce; daughter and son-in-law, Julie & Scott Boland of Prosperity; grandson, Brandon Boland of Prosperity; brother and sister-in-law, Drew and Jackie Baumhauer of Cedar Rapids Iowa. She was a daughter-in-law to Joe and Mary Joyce of St. Louis, MO, and aunt of Jill, Scott, Kris, Andrew III and Ashley and great aunt of Diana, Shannon, Amanda Erik, Hailey and Andrew IV. She was predeceased by her sister, Peggy Ann Kempf;

Dene was blessed to be in the care of Dr. Fred Kudrik of South Carolina Oncology Associates. His skills, knowledge and patience were always a comfort to her and the family. To all of his staff, your compassion and care meant a great deal; Howard, thank you for your guidance; to Corney @ Baptist Hospital and of course all the girls at Lexington Hospital Infusion Center. Laughter is everything and we sure had lots of that.

A memorial service with visitation with the family to follow will be held Wednesday December 17, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, located at 2336 Mt. Pilgrim Church Road, Prosperity, S.C. 29127. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Dean Willard

Dean Livingston Willard, Sr., 62, of Newberry, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Providence Hospital.

Born on January 17, 1947 in Union, he was the son of Candice Garland Willard and the late Coley Livingston Willard. He was a former employee of SLED where trained and worked with the Blood Hounds and retired from Southeastern Freight Lines. He was an avid sponsor of the National Rifle Association. He attended Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother, Candice Willard of Newberry; a son, Dean Livingston Willard, Jr. of Newberry; daughters, Angela Willard Liles and Deann Willard Swearingen both of Columbia; grandchildren, Zachary Livingston Derrick, Coley James Swearingen and Olivia Michael Swearingen.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2008 at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Whitmire Cemetery. Born on Oct. 10, 1945 in Pomaria, he was a son of the late Everett and Minnie Lou Suber Koon. Mr. Koon was a retired dairyman, a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are his brother, Wayne B. Koon of Little Mountain; a sister Lou K. Koon of Little Mountain; a special cousin, Martha Allen; step-mother, Katherine B. Koon of Chapin and his canine companion, Missy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Katherine Camp

Katherine Camp, 48 of Hendersonville, NC went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 7, 2008 after a courageous, seventeen year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

She was a native of Newberry, SC, a 1978 graduate of Newberry High School, 1982 graduate of Erskine College and 1994 graduate of Blue Ridge Community College. She moved to Hendersonville in 1982 and was employed by Wilcox World Travel and Tours as a travel agent for two years. She was preceded in death by her father, Willie E. Singley and father-in-law, Thomas Camp. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.

She is survived by her loving husband of 26 years, Jack Camp; two daughters, Jessica and Elizabeth Camp both of Hendersonville, NC; sisters Mary Carlisle of Newberry, SC and Annette Wacker of Boynton Beach, FL; mother Doris Singley of Newberry, SC; mother-in-law, Beatrice Camp of Hendersonville; and caregiver Carol Worthy of Hendersonville.

A memorial service will be held in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home at 11:00am on Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Reverend Eric Hardman will officiate. Born on March 7, 2004, he was a son of Harold Woodrow Berley and Deena Griffin Sligh. Chavis was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church where he was a member of The Little One’s Sunday School Class. He was also a student at Holy Trinity Preschool.

Surviving are his father of Pomaria and his mother of Charleston; sisters, Victoria Griffin of Pomaria and Breck Sligh of Newberry; brothers, Allen Berley of Pomaria and Will Berley of Prosperity; paternal grandmother, Ruby B. Deaton of Prosperity; maternal grandparents, Ada and Ken Griffin of Pomaria; maternal great-grandmother, Lillie Harmon of Newberry.

Vera Sanford Harris, 79, of Pomaria, widow of Monroe Jackson Harris, Sr. died Sunday, December 7, 2008 at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born on January 4, 1929 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late John Lee and Carrie Mae Padgett Sanford. Mrs. Harris was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Alter Guild and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are her sons, Monroe Jackson “Jackie” (Jenny) Harris, Jr. of Prosperity and J. Stanley Harris of Pomaria; a daughter, Cheryl (Dr. Leon) Bullard of Columbia; sisters, Narvis S. Willingham and Grace S. Clemmer both of Newberry and Ruth s. Hansen of Allenhurst, NJ; grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Harris, Erin Rebecca Harris, Jackson “BJ” Harris, Brenton Bullard, Jennifer Clay Bullard and Richard Lewis Bullard.

Bill loved fishing, hunting, camping, gourmet dining and blues, folk and country music.

Surviving are his father, William Oliver Haas, Jr. of Fairhope, AL; his mother, Barbara Williams Wise of Augusta, GA; daughters, Jennifer L. Haas of Augusta, GA and Christie L. Haas of Aiken, SC; aunt and uncle, Steve and Mary Phillips of Birmingham, AL; cousins, Rusty Walton of Augusta, GA and Dan W. Walton of San Antonio, TX; his former wife, Robin Haas of Edgefield, SC. Mr. Haas was predeceased by a sister, Cecily Cavanagh Haas.

Curtis "Hump" Shealy

Curtis E. “Hump” Shealy, 81, of Prosperity died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at his residence.

Born on April 10, 1927 in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Samuel Wilbur and Mary Eva Boozer Shealy. He was the retired owner of Shealy Dry Goods, an Army veteran having served in the Occupational Troops from 1945-1947 in Germany and was a former member of the Newberry County Council. Mr. Shealy was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where he was the Sunday School Secretary and a former Sunday School Superintendent and Church Council Member. He was a charter member of the Mid-Carolina Country Club.

Surviving are sons, Dale E. (Julie) Shealy and Deron A. Shealy; grandchildren, Christopher D. Shealy, Jessica R. Shealy and Matthew E. Shealy; sisters, Dorothy Springs, Bonnie Lawson and Peggy Ammons; a brother, S.W. Shealy, Jr.; special sisters-in-law, Betty K. Shealy and Myra Moore. Mr. Shealy was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Elaine Bowers Shealy, sisters, Annette Connelly, Ella Rae Graves and Wilma McDonald-Orgill and brothers, Carroll Shealy and Ellis Shealy.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eric Fink. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery.
