Clyde Thomas Mize
August 20, 1933 -
May 26, 2008

Clyde Thomas "Tommy" Mize, 74, of Newberry, died Monday, May 26, 2008 at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born in Newberry, he was a son of the late James Prelo and Pearl Russell Mize. He was an Army veteran, a member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church and retired from Senior Catering.

Surviving are his wife, Dora Jones Mize; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Yogi Livingston of Newberry; grandchildren, Hayli Livingston and Wesley Livingston. Mr. Mize was predeceased by brothers, Arthur Logan, James Mize, Jr. and John Mize.

Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Herbert Stephens. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, 1105 First Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Harold DeHart
September 26, 1936 -

Harold Estes DeHart, 71, of Prosperity died May 19, 2008 at his residence.

Born in Newberry, Mr. Dehart was the son of the late Jesse Harold and Eula Hester DeHart.

He is survived by a son, Harold E. DeHart, Jr. and his wife Sheryl of Cincinnati, Ohio; an Aunt, Helen New of Martinez, GA; a granddaughter, Stephanie DeHart, of Cincinnati, Ohio and a number of cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted at 4:00 PM Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Cemetery by the Rev. Arden Hallman. Kay Williams
November 30, 1947 -

Lana Kay Luker Williams, 60, of Newberry, died May 19, 2008 on her 40th wedding anniversary at her residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Woodruff, SC on November 30, 1947, she was the daughter of Carolyn Adams Luker and the late Archie O. Luker, Jr. Mrs. Williams was a 1966 graduate of Woodruff High School and a 1967 graduate of Waldrop Beauty Academy in Greenville, SC. She worked for over 35 years as a beautician in Woodruff, Westminster and Newberry. She had worked for a couple of years as a staff member with the special education class at Gallman Elementary where she was also a special education bus driver.

She was an active member of Glenn Street Baptist Church where she served as director of Vacation Bible School and Senior Activities until her health declined. She was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class, adult choir, ladies ensemble and handbells. She also, served as assistant director of Vacation Bible School for the Reedy River Baptist Association.

Surviving in addition to her mother, Carolyn Luker, of Woodruff are her husband, Douglas W. Williams; a daughter and son-in-law, Tonya M. and Stevie P. Sligh, Jr. of Newberry; a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory W. and Molly Williams of Lexington; grandchildren, Stevie P. Sligh III, Dylan W. Sligh and Chelsea M. Williams all of Newberry and Ryan P. Williams and Reese L. Williams of Lexington; special friends, Dovie Little of Westminster and Sandra Lominack of Newberry and her two precious puppies, Peaches and Missy. Mrs. Williams was predeceased by a brother, Larry Roger Luker.

Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray Ridgeway. Interment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 352, Newberry, SC 29108.

J. R. Bedenbaugh

Mr. James Roscoe “J.R.” Bedenbaugh of Newberry was called home to his heavenly family on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at the age of 93.

J.R. was born December 26, 1914, in Prosperity a son of the late John Roscoe (Ross) Bedenbaugh and Maude Boozer Bedenbaugh. He was a retired farmer who loved working in his garden, while wearing his trademark overalls and cap. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Grace Sease Sunday School Class and Grace Lutheran Church in Prosperity. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Aletha “Pete” Wertz Bedenbaugh; daughter, Alice B. Shaver and husband, Terry C. Shaver of Newberry; daughter-in-law, Elaine Bedenbaugh Webb and her husband, David Webb, Sr. of Ridgeway; a brother, John A. Bedenbaugh and Judy M. Bedenbaugh of Prosperity; a sister, Mildred B. Wilson and the late Marvin Wilson of Lilburn, GA; grandchildren, Lynn S. Wicker and husband, Duman of Pomaria; Rachelle B. Hitchler and husband, Matt of Horbach, Germany, Nina B. Griffin and husband, Travis of Silverstreet; great-grandchildren, Mary Alyse and James Cecil “J.C.” Wicker, Annika Jordan and Bryce Jameson Hitchler, William Travis “Will” and expected Easton James Griffin.

He was predeceased by a son, James Ralph Bedenbaugh; brothers, Woodrow Bedenbaugh, Ollie T. Bedenbaugh, Robert H. Bedenbaugh; sisters, Ruth B. Senn and Mae B. Finley.

The memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church in Prosperity. Pastor Eric Fink will officiate the service. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, PO Box 188, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Martha Koon

Martha Ellen Cumalander Koon, 86, of Little Mountain, widow of Russell B. Koon, died May 12, 2008 at her residence.

Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Lula Shealy Cumalander. Mrs. Koon was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where she was the first volunteer for the church preschool program, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and served on several church committees.

Surviving are a daughter, Ann (Dial) Long of Little Mountain; grandchildren, Kim (Kevin) Crumpton of Newberry and Josh (Jillian Brown) Long of Little Mountain. Mrs. Koon was predeceased by a special nephew, Earl Cumalander.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Fred Suhr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Sarah Ellen Johnson Mills, 64, of Newberry, widow of LV Mills died May 7, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Champ and Irene Lollis Johnson. She was retired from Whitten Center.

Surviving are a son, Randall Mills of Clinton; a daughter, Tangila Bowers of Pomaria; sisters, Betty Motte of Clinton and Linda Whitney of Union; grandchildren, Jessica M. Johnson, David Mills, Brandon Bowers and Zachary Bowers; and a dedicated cousin, Emmie Lou Smith of Columbia.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jeff O’Dell. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Nelva Brown

Nelva Barbara Adams Brown, 91, of Prosperity, widow of Richard Warner Brown, died May 7, 2008 at Springfield Place.

Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Leo Thomas and Mabel Alice Reynolds Adams. Mrs. Brown was retired from General Electric. She was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Petrea Circle and the Goldies. She was a member of the Drayton Rutherford Chapter of the UDC.

Surviving are a son, Frank T. “Tommy” (Janet) Brown of Prosperity; daughters, Peggy Joyce (Richard) Stepp of Fairfax, VA, Barbara Alice (Frank) Lyerly of Prosperity, Martha Joan (Charles) Taylor of Palm Coast, FL, Ruth Adeline Hamm of Prosperity, Linda Jean (Victor) Kelley of Prosperity; a sister, Dorothy A. Smith of Newberry; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by a son-in-law, Jimmy Hamm, a sister, Elizabeth Sineath, brothers, Haskell Adams, Raymond Adams, Clyde Adams, Jack Adams, Grady Adams, Alvin Adams and Eugene Adams.

Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2008 at Macedonia Lutheran Church by the Rev. Randy Derrick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Mary Folk

Mary Frances Folk, 81, formerly of Fayetteville, NC, died May 4, 2008 at White Oak Manor-Newberry.

Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late William Andrew and Ruth Keller Folk. She was a graduate of Monticello High School and the York County School of Nursing. Miss Folk was a retired registered nurse and a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Fayetteville, NC.

Surviving are a brother, Pressley Folk of Fayetteville, NC and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Cannon Creeks Prosperity A.R.P Church.
