Evelyn K. Lake
November 27, 1919 -
June 30, 2008

Evelyn Kunkle Lake, 88, of Newberry died June 30, 2008 at J.F. Hawkins Health Care.

Born in Newberry on Nov. 27, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Quincy Epting and Ellen Hawkins Kunkle. She worked for Carpenters Department store for seven years and retired from Bergens Gift Shop which she managed for 27 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where she was a member of the W.E.L.C.A. for 60 years, the New Horizons, and the Adult 2 Sunday School Class. She served as a Youth group advisor for a number of years as well as other various committees as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by her husband, Charles J. Lake; a son, Kenneth Lake and wife Janice of Newberry; daughters, Beverly Bowers and husband Grady of Prosperity, and Laura Reames and husband David of Kingsport, TN; sisters, Doris Hipp of Newberry and Ruby Dawkins of Saluda; a brother, Louis Kunkle and wife, Nelva of Newberry; grandchildren, Gregg Bowers, Mickey Bowers and wife, Angela, Edwin Lake and wife, Regina, Ben Lake and wife, Adrian, Allison Reames, and Whitney Nussman and husband Jarred; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by brothers Voight Kunkle and Elmer Kunkle, her step-mother, Erin M. Kunkle and a grandson, Grady Michael Bowers.

Services will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday, July 3, 2008, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Arden Hallman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall Fund, 4056 St. Luke’s Church Road, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Active pall bearers will be Joe Kunkle, Don Kunkle, Leslie Hipp, Bobby Kunkle, Gordon Dawkins, Carroll Lester, and Frank Kiker.
Honorary pall bearers will be members of the W.E.L.C.A., the Adult 2 Sunday School Class, and the New Horizons of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

Elaine Shealy

Elaine Bowers Shealy, 78, of Prosperity, died Saturday, June 28, 2008 at White Oak Manor.

Born in Prosperity on December 18, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Little Luther “Doc” and Ruth Long Bowers. Mrs. Shealy was retired from Old School Manufacturing and was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Grace Sease Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her husband, Curtis E. “Hump” Shealy; sons, Dale E. (Julie) Shealy and Deron A. Shealy both of Prosperity; a sister, Myra Moore of Prosperity; a special sister-in-law, Betty K. Shealy of Newberry; grandchildren, Christopher D. Shealy, Jessica R. Shealy and Matthew E. Shealy.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eric Fink. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. The family is at the home of Dale and Julie Shealy, 69 Oak Hill Road, Prosperity and will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Gladys Martin

Gladys Charles Martin, 86, of Prosperity, widow of Luther Troy “L.T.” Martin, died June 25, 2008 at White Oak Manor.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late John Mayfield and Mary Mitchell Charles. She was retired from the Kendall Company, Oakland plant and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

She is survived by sons, Luther Troy Martin, Jr. and wife Amy of Prosperity, Wayne Gregory of Irvin, TX; a daughter Faye Mace and husband Ray of Prosperity; a step-son, Toby Martin of Little Mountain; a sister, Clara Massey of Greenville; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the White Oak Manor, Activities Department, 2555 Kinard Street, Newberry.

Active pall bearers will be grandsons.

Rosalyn Moore

Rosalyn Shealy Moore, 96, of Prosperity, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

She was born in Little Mountain on August 30, 1911 to the late Roscoe O. and Katie S. Shealy. Mrs. Moore was retired from Old School Manufacturing and was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Otto Moore; a son, Glenn S. Moore of Prosperity; daughters, Rosemary Bedenbaugh of Prosperity and Annette Kyzer of Orangeburg; a sister, Catherine S. McComb of Anderson; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Moore was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2008 at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Arden Hallman. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will be at her residence, and they will receive friends Thursday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Thomas "Buddy" Ravan

Thomas Edward “Buddy” Ravan, 84, of Prosperity, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wellford on January 8, 1924 to the late George and Eva Blackwell Ravan. Mr. Ravan was a World War II veteran, was a member of Whitmire United Methodist Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church. He was retired from the Life of Virginia Insurance Company and had worked for many years with the Life of Georgia.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Childers Ravan; sons, Larry Ravan, Rick (Lisa) Ravan and Thomas Ravan, Jr. all of Prosperity; a granddaughter, Crystal Robertson and a great-granddaughter, Breeze Robertson. Mr. Ravan was predeceased by a grandson, Luke Ravan.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 27, 2008, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Lynn Peters. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Margaret Elizabeth “MeMe” Metts Edgins, 41, of Newberry, died Monday, June 23, 2008.

Mrs. Edgins was born on June 1, 1967 in Groton, CT. She was a daughter of the late Larry Daniel and Laura Marlene Ray Metts.

Surviving are her husband, Harold Edgins; her paternal grandmother, Margaret Metts of Greenwood and a brother, Jeffrey Daniel Metts of Prosperity.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, at Whitmire Cemetery by Chaplain Mark Bredholt. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 13795 C.R. Koon Highway, Newberry, SC 29108.

She was born on February 14, 1960, in Puebla, Mexico. She was the daughter of Herlinda Flores-Pina and Buenaventura Rodriquez.

Doneria Bledsoe Carver, 79, of Prosperity, widow of George L. Carver, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Hospice House in Greenwood.

Born in Newberry on May 8, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Alvin E. Bledsoe and Cora Hipp Bledsoe Mack. Mrs. Carver was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Senior Adult Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Little Mountain Chapter No. 276 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Road Runners.

Surviving are sons and their wives, Gerald “Jerry” Carver and Sue, George “Buck” Carver and Sheri, Robert “Bobby” Carver and Kathy; a brother and his wife, James W. Mack, Jr. and Jocelyn; grandchildren, Diana Carver, Robert Carver, Jr., Gregory Carver, Tina Pfeiffer, Geffrey Carver and Cassandra Carver; great-grandchildren, Caroline Carver, Jenna Carver, Sara Carver and Michael Pfeiffer. Mrs. Carver was predeceased by a son, Michael Carver, sisters, Elizabeth Carver, Gloria Ann Black and a brother, A. Earl Bledsoe.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Bethel Baptist Church followed by Eastern Star Rites. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at the church. Carey Todd Kingsmore, 43, of Prosperity, died Monday, June 16, 2008 at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born on May 25, 1965 in Newberry, he was a son of Kathryn Minick Kingsmore Bundrick and the late Raeford Lee Kingsmore. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his mother, Kathryn Bundrick; a son, Joshua Kingsmore; brothers, Brian Kingsmore and Ricky Kingsmore. He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Kingsmore.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Brent Nichols. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.

Johnny Buzhardt

John William “Johnny” Buzhardt, 71, of Prosperity, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at his residence.

Born on August 17, 1936 in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Leland V. and Eula Wicker Buzhardt. Mr. Buzhardt was a major league baseball player from 1958-1968. During his career he played for the Chicago Cubs, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago White Sox, the Baltimore Orioles and the Houston Astros. He played one year in Cuba in the winter league with the Havana Reds. Over his pitching career he held a 7 and 0 record against the New York Yankees.

Mr. Buzhardt was retired from Carolina Eastman. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where he was a former Church Council member. He was a charter member of the Mid-Carolina Country Club.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Hawkins Buzhardt; sons, Dr. Rick Buzhardt and wife, Melissa of Newberry, Allan Buzhardt and wife, Jo of Rock Hill; a daughter, Donna Buzhardt of Prosperity; sisters, Lurleen Seybt and her husband, Billy of Little Mountain and Sadie Morris of Prosperity; grandchildren, Bramlett Drew and husband, Nick, Jake Buzhardt, Rachel Buzhardt and Leland Buzhardt; great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Emma Jane Drew; many nieces and nephews and cherished friends including Moses Wise, Stevie Lawrence and Greg Mattox

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Arden Hallman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Curtis Turner

Curtis Paul Turner, 85, of Newberry, the widower of Frances Piner Turner, died June 8, 2008, at White Oak Manor, Newberry.

Born in Newberry, Mr. Turner was a son of the late Joseph and Florence Hall Turner. He was an Army veteran of World War II, retired from Kendall Company, Mollohon plant, as well as Newberry Mills. He was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church and was a Charter member of the Boat Club on Lake Murray.

He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth (Terry) Greene, and Peggy (Mitch) Ruff, both of Newberry, Dianne Kirkland of Woodruff, and Debbie (Tommy) McCullough, of Moncks Corner; a sister, Cathlene Driggers of Newberry; grandsons, Curtis Wilson Ruff, Michael Ruff, Keith Kirkland, Jr., Jeff Kirkland, Larry Kirkland, and Jesse McCullough; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Turner was predeceased by siblings, Nora Magbee, Chris A. Turner, Bernice Bannister, Josephine Roton, and Talmadge Turner, and a grandson, Henry Greene.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Wako Cotney. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family is at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Ruff, 243 Hopewell Church Road, Newberry, SC and will receive friends at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home, Tuesday from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. Nellie F. Mason, 94, of Newberry, widow of W. A. “Brick” Mason, Jr., died June 4, 2008, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Eugene and Margaret Parrott Fouche’. Mrs. Mason was retired from the Newberry County Department of Social Services. She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1932 where she was a member of the Kyrie Sunday School Class, the Lydia Group, JOY Choir, and Young at Heart. She was a former member of the Nosegay Garden Club and the Newberry Historical Society.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Jane Mason of Newberry; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Tom Love of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Christine Gill of Nashville, TN, Derrick Mason of Newberry, Elisa Leaird of Charleston, and Patrick Mason of Savannah, GA; five great-grandchildren, Ashton and Gabriele Mason, Chance and Hunter Leaird, and Linden Mason.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008 at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mason, 1250 Rose Lane, Newberry and will receive friends Friday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
