Allan Sheely

August 31, 2008

Allan Lester Sheely, 56, of Little Mountain, died Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Palmetto Health Baptist.

Mr. Sheely was born February 10, 1952 to the late James E. and Marie Amick Sheely. He was an employee of the South Carolina Department of Transportation and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a sister, Annette Berley of Pomaria; brothers, James E. “Jimmy” Sheely of Columbia and Donald L. Sheely of Little Mountain ; four nieces, two great nephews, one great-niece, three aunts and one uncle.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Fred Suhr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund, PO Box 186, Little Mountain, SC 29178.

Lionel McKee
December 2, 1929 -

Ernest Lionel McKee, 78, of Whitmire, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born in Whitmire on December 2, 1929, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Amanda Walls McKee. He was retired from Cone Mills, was a charter member of Clinton Road Wesleyan Church where he was a former church treasurer for many years, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and member of the Church Board. He attended Anderson First Church of God. He was also a barber and a member of the S.C. Barber’s Association. He was a regular visitor of nursing homes and was very dedicated to his family.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Tankersley McKee; daughters, Frankie M. (Gene) Church of Gatlinburg, TN and Ann (Casey) Chapman of Newberry, Whitney McKee and Brittany McKee both of Whitmire; sister, June M. Watkins of Whitmire; brother, Rev. Jayon McKee of Clinton; grandchildren, Kevin Bailey, Michelle Bailey Upton, Dana White and Christen Chapman; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Anderson First Church of God in Whitmire by Rev. Raymond Ford and Rev. Joel Mundy. Burial will follow in Whitmire Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. LTC James W. Counts

Lt. Col James Wedaman Counts (Ret.), beloved husband and father, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2008. Funeral services will be held at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, 2008 with burial following in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Born October 1, 1919 in Pomaria, he was the son of the late James Eugene Counts and the late Mattie Wedaman Counts. He was a graduate of Pomaria High School in 1936 and a graduate of Newberry College in 1940. He sold newspapers as a boy and worked a short time after graduating from college with the Agricultural Stabilization Committee. He enlisted as a private in the South Carolina National Guard in September 1940. He was inducted into active Army service in February 1941, and was promoted through the ranks to sergeant while stationed with the 107th Anti-Aircraft Battalion at Camp Stewart, Georgia. He attended OCS and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in August 1942. He served during World War II in European theater from April 1943 through October 1945. His duties with his anti-aircraft until took him to Morocco, Algeria, France and Germany. After the war he returned to South Carolina and immediately wed Helen Cubbison Ragsdale in Newberry on December 28, 1945. He then rejoined the South Carolina National Guard. He served with the Guard until retiring as a Colonel in September 1970. He worked for a few years at Frank Lominack’s Hardware in Newberry before starting his long career with the Post Office in 1948. He was promoted to Postmaster in Newberry in 1971. He retired from the Postal Service in 1979.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Redeemer for over 50 years, and performed many lay duties and held many offices during that time. He was a member of the American Legion, the Postal Clerks Association, the Postal Supervisors Organization, the National Association of Postmaster, and the Newberry Lions Club. He was particularly active in the Lions Club, and served for some time as the Club’s treasurer.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Cubbison Ragsdale Counts of Newberry, and his first daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Alicia Counts Blair and Robert C. Blair, Jr., grand-daughters, Beverly Wylie Blair Whitesides and Allison Blythe Blair, and great grand-children, Beverly MacKenzie Whitesides and Douglas Coleman Whitesides, and by his second daughter and son-in-law, Tracey Calhoun Counts Hunter and Robert Lewis Hunter, and grand-children, Nathan James Hunter and Hollie Helen Hunter. He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Eugene Counts, and sisters, Merriam Counts Langford and Frances Counts Swittenberg.

The family will receive friends at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home in Newberry from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2008

Doshia Baker

Doshia Louise Cromer Baker, 90, of Newberry, widow of Hubert Baker, died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at White Oak Manor.

Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late William C. and Mary Ellen Brennan Cromer. Mrs. Baker was a member of Enoree Baptist Church.

She is survived by a number of cousins including devoted cousins, Ann and Richard Bowers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. George Leagan. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Enoree Baptist Church, c/o Reba Lake, 5101 Jolly Street Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a brother, Landon Major Howell; her maternal grandparents, Rose Marie Grainger and Dean Black; maternal great-grandparents, George Black and James Carlyle Grainger and her aunt, Meagan Dean Black.

Bertha Mae Dennis

Bertha Mae D. Dennis, 90, of Prosperity, widow of J. Frank Dennis, died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Prosperity on July 18, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Eddie C. and Christina Mills Dominick. Mrs. Dennis was a retired co-owner of Dennis Grocery and homemaker. She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Lydia –Fellowship Bible Class, The Young at Heart and a Life Member of the U.M.W.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Frank Milton and Diane Dennis of Prosperity; a grandson and his wife, Anthony M. and Missy Dennis of Prosperity; a sister, Betty Dill of Prosperity; a brother, Wyman Dominick of Prosperity. She was predeceased by sisters, Pearl Bowers and Evelyn Kyzer and brothers, Raymond, Claude, E.C., Otis, Roy and Lewis Dominick.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 24, 2008, at Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Drennen Lowry. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Kay Kibler

Kathryn “Kay” H. Kibler, 75, of Newberry, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at her residence.

Born in Monroe, NC, on Sept. 20, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Pearl Pressly Helms. Mrs. Kibler attended Newberry College and worked for Coca Cola Bottling Company of Columbia. She was a member of St. Philip’s Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Class B Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her husband, William D. Kibler, Jr.; a son, Keith D. (Roxanne) Kibler of Statesboro, GA and a granddaughter, Lauren Nichole Kibler. Mrs. Kibler was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Lewis V. “Helen” Ringer and a brother Kenneth Helms.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2008, at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Terry Amick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Betty Frick

Mrs. Betty Bedenbaugh Frick,76, of Chapin died Friday at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Prosperity, Mrs. Frick was a daughter of the late Horace and Colene Smith Bedenbaugh. She was retired from Damon International and was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, Ubric E. Frick; a son, Charles Frick of Beech Creek, KY; a sister, Annie B. Frick of Chapin; and a brother, Paul Bedenbaugh of Prosperity. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary B. Summer and Dorothy B. Harris.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday at Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul Wollner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 until 6:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 678, Prosperity, 29127.

Maria Luisa Rodriguez, 72, of Newberry, widow of Paulino Chavez, died Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born in Mexico City, Mexico, she was a daughter of the late Luis Rodriquez-Rios and Julia Nunez-Yanez. Mrs. Rodriguez was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – Newberry.

Surviving are her sons, Roberto Chavez of Newberry and Jose Chavez of Mexico; daughters, Patricia Lyons and Maria Lopez both of Mexico and Gloria Lemus and Martha Chavez both of Newberry; sisters, Guadalupe Rodriguez, Rosaria Cruz, Elena Rodriguez, Maria Renterias; brothers, Jorge Rodriguez, Ruben Rodriguez, Ricardo Rodriguez, Luis Rodriguez, Alejandro Rodriguez, Mario Rodriguez and Fernando Rodriguez; 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints-Newberry. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Born in Connersville, IN, he was a son of Robert C. and Betty Nichols Biddle. Mr. Biddle was an Army veteran.

He is survived by his parents, Robert C. and Betty Nichols Biddle of Newberry; a son, Shannon Biddle; a sister, Marti Biddle; brothers, Phil Biddle and Lonnie Biddle.

Edward Thomas “Eddy” Taylor, 63, of Newberry died Thursday, August 7, 2008, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born in Newberry on July 28, 1945, he was the son of the late Ezra Thomas “E.T.” and Berdia Carter Taylor. He was owner of Eddy Taylor Photography and was a member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Wells Taylor; sons, Randy Taylor and his wife, Donna of Charleston and Alex Taylor and his wife, Dana of Newberry; a sister, Nancy Bouknight and her husband, Gilbert of Newberry; and a granddaughter, Katelyn Taylor. He was predeceased by a sister Patsy Kinard.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 10, 2008, at Summer Memorial Lutheran Church by the Rev. Kathy Harris. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
