Nell Taylor

Sara Nell Johnson Taylor, 77, of Newberry, widow of Clyde Ramie Taylor, died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Mrs. Taylor was born on March 12, 1931 in Newberry. She was a daughter of the late George Andrew and Eva Pitts Johnson and was a member of Trinity United Methodist.

Surviving are her sons, Tracy (Bridgette) Taylor of Prosperity and his daughter, Maggie Taylor and Andy (Missy) Taylor of Pomaria and his daughter, Jordan Taylor; brothers, Olin (Doris) Johnson and Herman (Dot) Johnson both of Newberry; sisters, Rebecca Bundrick of Silverstreet, Linda Rowe of Newberry and Alice Moore of Prosperity. Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by a brother, Billy Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Hugh Bickley. Thomas Wier

Thomas W. Wier, 92, of Newberry, widower of Ruby L. Wier, died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Langston House in Clinton.

Mr. Wier was born on May 12, 1916 in Reno, SC. He was a son of the late Samuel L. and Carrie Lee Buford Wier. Mr. Wier was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired from West End Mill. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, the VFW and a former member of the Newberry Moose Lodge.

Surviving are his sisters, Eleanor Paysinger of Wilmington, NC and Carolyn Hollis of Clinton.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in Rosemont Cemetery.

Jim Feagle

James Lawrence “Jim” Feagle, 78, of West Columbia, died Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Lexington Medical Center.

Mr. Feagle was born on Feb. 19, 1930 in Newberry. He was a son of the late W. Rea and Edna Halfacre Feagle. He was the retired owner of Chapin Building Supply and was a former automobile salesman. Mr. Feagle was a Korean War Army veteran.

Surviving are cousins and a special friend, Sherri Baker.

Bennie Williams

Bennie Lewis Williams, 74, of Newberry, passed away suddenly, September 24, 2008 at his residence. Born in Saluda County on January 14, 1934 he was a son of the late Bennie W. and Fairbelle Proctor Williams.

He was retired from American Fiber and Finishing and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Bush River Young Farmers, and the Bush River Activities Association. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved working outside and was an avid farmer, gardener and hunter.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bobby Ann Shealy Williams, two daughters, Annette Bledsoe and her husband, Glenn of Newberry and Chrissie Campitella and her husband, Mark of Chapin; a son, Danny Williams and his wife, Beverly of Newberry; two sisters, Lula Bowers of Prosperity and Fay Shealy of Newberry; four grandchildren, Lane Williams, Morgan Williams, Benjamin Bledsoe, and Cory Campitella and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Troy Williams and Donnie Williams and a sister, Betty Ann Slice.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 27, 2008, at St. James Lutheran Church by the Rev. Rodney Gunter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 -8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 228 Jalapa Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Marion Boland

Marion McCormack Boland, 83, of Silverstreet, widow of H. Eugene Boland, died Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at Palmetto Health Richland.

Mrs. Boland was born on Oct. 14, 1924 in Yonkers, NY. She was a daughter of the late Henry Milton and Elizabeth Clark McCormack. She was retired from Newberry County Memorial Hospital, was a member of the Silverstreet Ruritan Club and the Roadrunners. Mrs. Boland was a member of Silverstreet Lutheran Church where she was a member of the W.E.L.C.A.

Surviving are her daughters, Judi Meler of Mission Viejo, CA and Karen Rabert of Chapin; a step-son, Thomas Boland of Lexington; a step-daughter, Bonnie Lane of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Boland was predeceased by sons, Sigmund Joseph Janas, William Franklin Clontz and Thomas L. Woolford and a sister, Elizabeth Turcotte.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Silverstreet Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Elizabeth Anne Counts, 70, of Newberry, died Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at Heartland Hospice House.

She was born on February 27, 1938 in Prosperity. Mrs. Counts was a daughter of the late John Forrest and Mary Louise Shealy Wheeler. She was an employee of the S.C. Department of Revenue and a member of Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her husband, William Royce Counts; a brother, John F. (Sylvia) Wheeler of Prosperity; a niece, Bridget Wheeler White; a nephew, Johnny (Melba) Wheeler; great nieces, Brittany Measamer and Nikki Measamer; a great nephew, Austin Wheeler. Mrs. Counts was predeceased by an infant son, William Gregg Counts.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church by the Rev. James Shealy, Rev. Floyd Sides and Rev. Brent Nichols. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Nolan Lance

Nolan “Mac” Lance, 87, of Prosperity, died Saturday, September 20, 2008 at his residence.

Born in Burnsville, NC on July 20, 1921, he was a son of the late Millard and Sadie Lance. Mr. Lance was a World War II Air Force veteran and retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and as a security guard. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Ayers Lance; sons, Gary Lance of Prosperity and Neal Lance of Fayetteville, NC; daughters, Wanda Skoropat of Kansas City, MO and Sandra Kozar of Blacksburg, VA; a brother, Ralph Lance of Asheville, NC; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery upon completion of the new national cemetery in November.

Jean McKay

Jean Katelyn McKay, 13, of Prosperity, died Friday, September 19, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Pontiac, MI on September 23, 1994. She was the daughter of A. Frank and Dorothy Elizabeth Pelke McKay. She had been a special needs student at Nursery Road Elementary and presently at Gallman Elementary and a member of First Baptist Church of Prosperity. Jean was a participate in the Special Olympics and always had a smile for everyone.

Surviving are her parents of Prosperity; sisters, Kim (Ed) West and Harrieshia McKay of Prosperity; brothers, Scott (Jean) McKay of Irmo, Andrew (Amy) McKay of Huntington Beach, CA., Nathan McKay and Colin McKay both of Prosperity

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Prosperity. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 362, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Emma Dudis

Emma Lillian Long Dudis, 88, of Prosperity, died Friday, September 19, 2008, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born in Prosperity on June 22, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Rufus and Frances Livingston Long. Ms. Dudis was a WAVES Navy World War II veteran and a member of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and obtained her Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina. Ms. Dudis was a retired educator having taught in Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia and South Carolina.

Surviving are her sisters, Verta Overbeek of Grant, MI and Floy Eargle of Prosperity; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Boyd Long.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 pm Monday, September 22, 2008, at Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church by the Rev. Paul Wollner with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family is at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Elon Eargle and will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Active Pall bearers will be Eric Eargle, Reece Eargle, Seth Eargle, Robert Rhame, and Justin Koon.

Carol H. Madden, 62, of Newberry, died Monday, September 15, 2008 at Ascension Hospice House in Irmo.

Born in Gideon, MO on April 28, 1946, she was a daughter of the late James Harvey and Ines Mae Gillihan Hartwick. Ms. Madden was a hairdresser and was an associate real estate broker who won numerous realtor awards and was the editor of the realtor newsletter.

Surviving are sons, James Patrick Hazel of Franklin, Germany and Kevin Scott Hazel of Silverstreet; grandsons, Alexander Scott Hazel and Sloan Matthew Hazel.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2008, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Kathryn Summer Hamm, 87, of Newberry, widow of John William Hamm, died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at White Oak Manor.

Born in Newberry on Nov. 7, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ella Sligh Summer. Mrs. Hamm was retired from Belk and was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Frank (Judy) Hamm of Newberry; daughters, Louella (Harmon) Brehmer of Kinards and Johnette (Troy) Bowers and Barbara (Larry) Swygert of Newberry; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hamm was predeceased by a son, William Ralph Hamm and was the last surviving sibling of her family.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Guilford Edwards, Jr., 73 of Prosperity, SC, died Saturday at home after an extended illness.

He was a retired supervisor with Universal Tobacco Co. He was a Mason, Scottish Right and Shriner. He was a member of Fresno Lodge 247 AF & AM, Fresno, CA.
He was a Member of Fair Bluff Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Mr. Edwards was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Guilford Edwards Sr. and Clara Turbeville Edwards. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Edwards, sisters, Bertha Smith and Wendy Georgis and one grandchild, David C. Edwards Jr.

He is survived by his loving companion, Clarice Manning of Prosperity, SC; three sons, Joseph A. Edwards of Luffkin, TX, David C. Edwards of Irmo, SC, Guilford Edwards III of Fair Bluff, NC; one daughter, Sabrina E. Mennella of Morehead City, NC; three brothers, Vollie Edwards of Fair Bluff, NC, Phillip Edwards of Chadbourn, NC, Robert Edwards of Fair Bluff, NC; five sisters, Faye Wiggins of Marion, SC; Shelby Harrellson of Raleigh, NC, Mickie Elliott of Chadbourn, NC, Rose Vassey of Maine, Alice Bass of Chadbourn, NC; Four grandchildren, Elysia Edwards, Emily Edwards, Ethan Edwards and Isabella Mennella.

Funeral Services will be held at Fair Bluff Baptist Church Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Ray Lundy will officiate. Burial will be in the Edwards Cemetery, Cerro Gordo, NC. Lee Jeremias

Mattie Lephon Hall Long “Lee” Jeremias, 70, of Newberry died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at White Oak Manor.

Born in Logap, N.C. on Dec. 17, 1937, she was a daughter of Alma Helen Lundy Hall Wright and the late Walker Bishop Hall. She was the retired owner of Two Loose Screws Antiques, former owner of Another Thyme Country Store and Antiques, former Host of “Coffee with Lee” on Radio Station WKDK, a Past Executive Director of the Newberry Downtown Development Association and a former Sales person at Bergen’s Ladies Shop. She was a Life member of the American Rose Society, a member of the South Carolina Rose Society, and the Newberry-Saluda Rose Society. She was a Horticulture Judge and Arrangement Judge, and staged the Rose Show at the South Carolina State Fair for many years.

She is survived in addition to her mother of Kernersville, NC, by her husband, Dr. Charles G. Jeremias; a step-son, Charles P. Jeremias of Newberry; a step-daughter, Donna J. Brummett of Newberry; brothers, Ford Willis Hall of King, N.C., James Walker Hall of Pinnacle, N.C., and William Lundy Hall of Kernersville, N.C., a sister Carol Hall Hoover of Kernersville, N.C.; an aunt, Elizabeth Ramey of Kernersville; and 5 step-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by two sons, Jeffery Monroe Long and John Darren Long.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 16, 2008, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Brummett, 1220 Calhoun Street, Newberry. The family suggests that those desiring may make memorials to White Oak Manor, 2555 Kinard Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Chessie Mae Woodward Lee, 93, of West Columbia, widow of Walter C. Lee, Sr., died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at her residence.

Born in Newberry on March 15, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Henry Collie and Lillie Belle Fulmer Woodward. She was a member of St. David’s Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a son, Walter C. Lee, Jr. of El Paso, TX; a daughter, Shirley L. Alvarez of West Columbia; sisters, Anna Monroe and Lillie Harmon both of Newberry and Frances Griffin of Pomaria and Hattie Lever of Anderson; grandchildren, Susan Boland, Katrina Coral, Mike Lee and Steve Lee; seven great-grandchildren; extended family Julie Greer and Edrie Greer. Mrs. Lee was predeceased by a brother, Henry Colie Woodward, Jr.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. James Lawrence. Born in Hahira, Georgia on September 20, 1952, he was a son of the late Willie Mallie Thomas, Sr. and Mildred Simmons Thomas. Mr. Thomas was an employee of Trucast, an Army veteran and a member of A.B.A.T.E.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Armstrong Thomas; a son, Willie Daniel (Amy) Thomas of Chapin; step-daughters, Jodene (Michael) Cain of Jasper, GA and Anna Rodriguez of Newberry; sisters, Judy Burnette of Gainesville, GA, Fran Hansard of Valdosta, GA, Clara Mae Townsend of Cartersville, GA and Samantha Brookshire of Gainesville, GA; brothers, Willie Mallie Thomas of Gainesville, GA, Benny Thomas of Clyattville, GA and Russell Thomas of Quitman, GA; grandchildren, Tyler Thomas and Tori Thomas; step-grandchildren, Javier Rodriguez, Michael B. Cain, Joshua D. Cain, Abigail Cain and Bailey Cain.

Bobby Ray Hansel, 72, of Prosperity, died September 4, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Cawood, Kentucky on April 2, 1936. Mr. Hansel was a son of the late John T. and Georgia Blanton Hansel. He was retired from McKechnie and was an Army Veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda Cain Hansel; sons, Todd (Karen) Hansel of Pomaria and Shannon (Stacy) Hansel of Whitmire; sisters, Gail Frederick of Trenton, KY and Janice Burchwell of Guthrie, KY; a brother, Tommie Hansel of Spartanburg; grandsons, Payton Hansel and Tyler Hansel.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Joel Mundy. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Virgil Graham
August 4, 1925 -

Virgil Boykin Graham born August 4, 1925 went home to be with his Lord on September 1, 2008 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Graham was the son of the late Marvin Hubert and Minnie Berley Graham of Pomaria. He was first married to the late Una Leitzsey Graham for 44 years. Surviving are a son, Kenneth (Nancy) Graham; a daughter, Elizabeth (Paul) Williamson; grandchildren, Landee (Tommy) Buzhardt, Kenny (Cherie) Graham, Kristy Graham all of Pomaria and Kerry (Carroll) Frick of Little Mountain; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Jacob and Jessica Graham, Seth and Katelyn Buzhardt and Kayden Beverly. He was later married to Mary Frances Medlock Graham for 18 years. Surviving are two step-daughters, Rebecca (Curtis) Moore of Ladson and Beverly (Mack) Henderson of Summerville; grandchildren, James Hartley and David Richardson both of Summerville.

Mr. Graham is also survived by brothers, Hubert Graham of Newberry, Cecil (Annie Laura) Graham; sisters, Willie Mae (Robert) Lindler, Geneve (Bobby) Morse all of Pomaria and Polly (Freeman) Sharpe of Blythewood; sister-in-law, Ruby Mae Graham of Pomaria. He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Graham.

In June 1969, he and his son, Kenneth began Green Acres Dairy Farm. Later the business expanded into construction. He enjoyed farming and being with his family and friends. He was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 24. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 3, 2008 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home in Newberry. Services will be conducted Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pomaria by Rev. Henri Bishop and Dr. Rev. Guy Shealy.

Active pallbearers are Josh Graham, Danny Wayne Graham, Jimmy Leitzsey, Fred Cumalander, Barry Richardson, Mark Henderson, David Richardson, James Hartley and Clark Stillenger.
