Arren Inman Smith, Jr. a distinguished South Carolina businessman and World War II veteran died Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the age of 93. Mr. Smith was co-founder of Covington and Smith Cotton Company, C & S Chevrolet, C & S Toyota Mazda, and North Commodities. He served as an officer under General George Patton with the Third Army in Germany and was a double Purple Heart recipient.
AI Smith was born January 22, 1920, in Clio, South Carolina to Arren Inman Smith and Rena Maynard Smith. He is survived by his wife, Wylene Lindler Smith; a daughter, Suzanne Smith Jordan (Whit); a son, Arren Inman Smith III (Nancy); a sister, Belle Morrison “Boody” Smith; and two grandchildren, Louisa Jordan Morris (Charles Hill) and Elizabeth Smith Smith (Jason) as well as three stepchildren, Janet Hudnell (Mike), Carroll Wingard (Pam), Warren Wingard (Susan); great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Sara Smith Miller and two half-sisters and two half-brothers.
The funeral will be Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at 2:00 pm at Wightman United Methodist Church, Prosperity, SC. Prior to the service the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church beginning at 1:00 pm. A burial service will be at St. Andrews Lutheran Cemetery in Columbia.
Serving as pallbearers are Jeff Phillips, Danny Covington, Johnny James, Melvin Dominick, Bud Bowers and Corrin Bowers. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Francis Asbury Sunday School Class.
