Allene Cook

Allene Merchant Cook, 86, of Newberry, widow of John Howard Cook, died Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Greenville Glen in Greenville, SC.

Born on June 19, 1926, in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Silas Roland and Sue Quattlebaum Merchant. Mrs. Cook was a graduate of Newberry College and owned and operated Local Finance in Newberry. She was a member of the Newberry Chapter # 226 of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Past Matron. She was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church where she was a longtime member of the choir and a former Sunday School member.

Mrs. Cook is survived by a sister, Helen Rister of Greenville; an aunt, Eula Q. Livingston of Columbia; nieces and nephews, Christine R. Fisher of Mauldin, Linda H. Clark of Prosperity, Warren T. Givens of Raleigh, Wayne E. Rister of Newberry, Janice R. Skalicky of Greenville and David H. Givens of Lexington and many great and great-great nieces and nephews that she loved.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dr. Mary Havens. Memorials may be made to Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church, 1307 Drayton Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
