Alton Wicker, 87, of Newberry, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at his residence.
Born on January 3, 1925, in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Forrest and Essie Long Wicker. He was a World War II Navy veteran who served 18 months in the Pacific on the USS Cabot. Mr. Wicker worked for Newberry Mills until it closed and later retired from American Fiber and Finishing. He was a member of Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church where he was a former member of the Church Council. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Mr. Wicker is survived by his wife, Hazel Kinard Wicker; a son, Barry Alton (Diane) Wicker of Newberry; a sister, Christine Fulmer of Newberry; grandchildren, Michael Shane (Monica) Wicker and Mary Ann (Alan) Miner and great-grandchildren, Barry Shane Wicker and Mary Michell Miner. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Roton Wicker, an infant son, a sister, Erin Bryan and brothers, Claude Wicker and Ray Wicker.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, January 26, 2012, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Floyd Sides. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
