Ann P. Stone

Gloria “Ann” Phillips Stone, 75, of Newberry, died on October 2, 2024, her 75th birthday.Born on October 2, 1949, in Newberry, she was the only daughter of the late Dwight “Pete” and Ethel Harrelson Phillips.

She was a graduate of Newberry High School, and a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Ann worked long hours to provide for her family and cared for her ill parents until their deaths. She was a very determined person, who overcame many obstacles in her life. Ann is best known for her fun-loving, passionate, and heart-felt personality. She worked at Damon International in Newberry until it’s closing, which provided the opportunity of her life to attend nursing school. Ann was a registered nurse and worked at Prisma Health Richland Memorial Hospital for 30 years. She worked in the field of Oncology and Hematology and taught classes on both. She was one of the first mismatched Bone Marrow Transplant nurses at Prisma Health Richland. Ann later worked with dementia and Alzheimer's patients until her retirement in 2015. After retirement, Ann worked as a substitute nurse for the Newberry County School District. Nursing was important to Ann, but her greatest treasure and first priority was always her family. Whether her children, grandchildren or great grandchildren were involved in cheerleading, football, soccer, softball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, or dance, their Maw Maw was always there to support them and to cheer them on. Some of her favorite memories were of holiday and birthday gatherings, and family vacations at Ocean Lakes Campground in Myrtle Beach. Ann will be remembered for her willingness to answer any call from friends, family, or someone in need. With Ann’s passion for nursing and helping others, her final wish was to donate her remains to the Medical University of SC in Charleston.

She is survived by her children, Deedee (Benji) Westwood; Thomas E. “Eddy” (Melanie) Stone, Jr., and James “J.D.” (Dawn) Stone; grandchildren, Austin Westwood (Cheyenne Hollaway), Adam Westwood, Erica (Douglas) Ard, Corey (Madison) Stone, Kaitlyn Stone (Hayden Wilson), and Kaley Stone; great-grandsons, Jacob Inman, Bentley Ard, and Graham Ard; a dear cousin, Jackie Kesler, a sister-in-law, Jeanie Phillips; three special children, Paeton, Paisley, and Maci; and many loved nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Tony Phillips.
