Annelle Ruff Lake, 89, of Newberry, the widow of The Honorable Walter T. Lake, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on November 11, 1923, in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Nolan and Pearl Boozer Ruff. She was a 1944 Cum Laude graduate of Newberry College. She was a school teacher who taught at the Hollywood High School in Saluda and also in Newberry County Schools before retirement. She was a much loved educator who inspired many students during her teaching career. In her later years she was always delighted to see former students who expressed their appreciation for her having taught them. She was honored by the Hollywood High School Class of 1962 at their 50 th anniversary reunion in 2012. Mrs. Lake was a member of the Newberry County Retired Teachers Association and Lebanon United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan A. Lake of Columbia; a son, Walter T. “Chip” Lake and Phyllis B. Jolley of Newberry; a sister, Etta Rae Weaver of Sylvania, GA; sisters-in-law, Renita Ruff, Jean Ruff and Betty Ruff Schumpert; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lake was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Sease and brothers, Earl Ruff, Nolan Ruff, Jr., Murray Ruff and Rev. Wallace Ruff.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Friday, May 10, 2013, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Inman and Rev. Fred Buchanan. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lebanon United Methodist Church, 1401 Milligan Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the Newberry County Council on Aging, 1300 Hunt Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
