Barbara E. Longshore, 65, of Columbia, died Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at the Heritage at Lowman.
Born on November 29, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Marvin Everette and Roberta Ernestine Lindler Longshore. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Columbia where she was a member of the Elizabeth Circle. Ms. Longshore had a distinguished career in the field of health and human services. She started at Aiken County Department of Social Services in 1966, was promoted to the state office of the SC Department of Social Services in Columbia in 1979, and moved with the Medicaid program to the State Department of Health & Human Services in 1984 (SCDHHS). She retired from SCDHHS as the Director of the Division of Medicaid Eligibility Policy. In her years of service, she assisted in the passage of the Medically Indigent Assistance Act and several major expansions of Medicaid coverage for the poorest and most vulnerable citizens of South Carolina. At her retirement, she was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent by Governor James Hodges.
She is survived by a sister, Marsha Huggins of Silverstreet; brothers, Lin (Colletta) Longshore of Irmo and Patrick (Dorothy) Longshore of Prosperity; nieces and nephews, Candace Bouknight, Jason (Jaclyn) Huggins, Karla (Travis) Gilliam, Ryan (Lauren) Longshore, Matt Longshore, Katy Longshore and Drew Longshore; great nieces and nephews, Shane Bouknight, Marci Bouknight, Cassie Gilliam, Christian Gilliam, Justin Huggins and J.P. Huggins. She was predeceased by brother-in-law, Mike Huggins.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 6, 2010, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbia by the Rev. Gary Loadholdt. Committal services will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Silverstreet Lutheran Church in Silverstreet. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
