Billy Gene Berley, 88, of Newberry, passed away March 11, 2023 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on June 30, 1934 in Pomaria, he was a son of the late James H. and Lula Mae Wicker Berley.
He was a graduate of Monticello High School and served nine years in the South Carolina National Guard. He was a retired asbestos insulator with Covil Insulation Company of Greenville, SC. Mr. Berley was a member of Central United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Treasurer, Usher, and member of the Administrative Board, the Financial and the Staff Parish Committees. He loved deer and rabbit hunting and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren how to hunt. He loved growing and sharing vegetables, and spending time with his family working in their garden.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Peggy B. Berley; 5 children: Phil (Michaela) Berley, Bruce Berley, John (Liz) Berley, Laurie (Joe) Miller, and Michael (Susan) Berley; grandchildren: Mallory, Hunter, Chase, Oli, Hart, Nathan, Andrew, Tyler, and Jake; step-grandchildren: Kristi and Brittany (Josh); 3 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; siblings: Mildred Fowler, Troxel Sligh, Shirley Riley, and Donald G. Berley.
He was predeceased by brothers J. Harvey Berley and J. Everette Berley; and by a daughter-in-law, Kim Berley.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 12, 2023 from 5:00 until 6:30pm at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 13, 2023 at 3:00 pm, at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joe Long. A private family burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Active pall bearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary pall bearers will be the Central UMC Fellowship Class.
