Billy Smith

Billy Smith, 77, of Newberry, died Monday, August 8, 2022, at his residence.

Born on January 28, 1945, in Newberry, he was a son of the late Heber L. and Mary Wicker Smith. He was retired after 30 years from the South Carolina Department of Transportation where he did highway maintenance and was a bridge crew foreman.

Mr. Smith was a member of St. Philip's Lutheran Church. He volunteered for a number of years with the St. Philip's Fire Department and was presently an honorary member.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as just spending time outside.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Hunter Smith; daughters, Renee Smith (Bobby Bannister) of Little Mountain and Cheryl Mills (Douglas) of Prosperity; sisters, Gertice Rister of Chapin and Mary Jean McCarson of Prosperity; brothers, Earl Smith of Newberry and Leroy Smith Lexington; grandchildren, Timmy Fulmer (Samantha) and Seth Fulmer (Abby Stutts) both of Newberry; a great-grandson, Tennessee Fulmer. He was predeceased by sisters, Reba Nell Rollins, Fannie Mae Walton, Iona Frick and Rachel Richardson, brothers, George Smith and Johnny Smith and a granddaughter, Tristan Nicole Fulmer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 12, 2022, at St. Philip's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Terry Amick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, August 11, 2022, at the Mcswain-Evans Funeral Home from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.  Memorials may be made to St. Philip's Lutheran Church, 2461 St. Philip's Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108, American Heart Association, 190 Knott Abbott Drive #301, Cayce, SC 29033 or the Ronald McDonald House, 2901 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.
