Bright May Griffin, 92, of Pomaria, died Saturday, December 31, 2022 at his residence.
Born on April 24, 1930 in Pomaria, he was a son of the late Oral Thomas and Gladys Richardson Griffin. Mr. Griffin was a graduate of Newberry College. He taught school and coached at Pomaria High School for 8 years. He later went to work at the South Carolina Highway Department where he retired as a Civil Engineer. He was a United States Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Griffin was a lifelong, faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served on many committees and was a former member of the church council. He enjoyed gardening, farming, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. After retirement, his favorite past time was attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren activities.
He is survived by his wife, Essie Overstreet Griffin; a son, Rusty (Donna) Griffin; daughter-in-law, Susan Griffin; grandchildren, William Griffin, Melanie Bouknight, Brad Griffin, Jonathan Griffin, Russell Griffin, and Emily Williams; great-grandchildren, Ryan Bouknight, Cole Bouknight, Addison Williams, Britton Williams, Haley Griffin, Erin Warren, Adelynn Griffin, Teagan Griffin, and Payton Ruff; a great-great-grandchildren, Hudson Warren.
He was predeceased by sons, Dr. John D. Griffin, William “Steve” Griffin, Sr. and his wife, Janet and Charles “Chuck” Griffin, a sister, Dorothy Griffin Berley; and by brothers, Thomas “Bill” Griffin, Kenneth Griffin, Armor “A.J.” Griffin, Phillip Griffin, Ed Griffin, and Harry Griffin.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. Art Hallman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 - 6:30 pm at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 209 New Hope Road, Pomaria, SC 29126.
Active pallbearers will be William Griffin, Brad Griffin, Russell Griffin, Jonathan Griffin, Aaron Bouknight, Matt Bowers, Mike Bowers, and Tim Ringer.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Carroll Pinner, III, Peggy and Monte Bowers, Jimmy Bonner, Mike Ware, and Jean Hallman.
The familywould like to extend sincere appreciation for the compassionate care that was provided by his caregivers.
