Charles J. Lake, 94, of Newberry, widower of Evelyn Kunkle Lake, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at his residence.
Born on June 13, 1914 in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Edwin O. and Bessie Day Nichols Lake. He owned and operated Lake’s Turkey Farm and retired from Fulmer Building Supply. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where he was a former church councilman and was a founding member of the Stoney Hill Center.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth Lake and wife, Janice of Newberry; daughters, Beverly Bowers of Prosperity, and Laura Reames and husband, David of Kingsport, TN; a sister, Lois L. Dominick of Prosperity; grandchildren, Gregg Bowers, Mickey Bowers and wife Angela, Edwin Lake and wife, Regina, Ben Lake and wife Adrian, Allison Reames, and Whitney Nussman and husband, Jarred; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by a sister, Eoline L. Boozer and brothers, Edwin S. Lake, Walter T. Lake, and Clyde N. Lake and a grandson, Grady Michael Bowers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 4, 2009, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Ronald G. Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is at his residence and will receive friends from 6:30 - 8:00 PM Friday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
