S. Charlie Altman, 94, passed away in Newberry, S.C on Monday, April 11, 2016. He was born in Brittons Neck, SC to Bruce and Lillie Thomas Altman. He graduated from Mullins High School. He was a Navy Pilot and then in the Naval Reserve. He graduated from the University of South Carolina. He moved to Newberry in 1950. He served as President of the Newberry Jaycees, Chairman of the Newberry County March of Dimes, President of the PTO for Boundary Street Elementary School, and Director of the Newberry County Civil Defense Program. He was a member of the Newberry County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council and the Council on Aging. He was a member of the Masons and the American Legion. He was a member of Mid-Carolina Country Club and past president of the Newberry Country Club. He became owner and president of Service Finance Company where he became a pioneer in the movement to organize the S.C. Small Loan Association. He was a founder and charter member which later became known as the S.C. Consumer Finance Association. He sold his finance company and restyled it as Altman Appliance and Furniture Company and closed it after 48 years of service.
He is predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Barbara Jean Mims “BJ” Altman, his second wife, Mary Helen Conder Altman, a daughter, Lyn Altman Thomas and a sister, Burnette Altman Fox.
He is survived by his daughters, Ellen Altman Kennedy of Tampa, FL and Jean (Mike) Altman McDoniels of Ocala, FL; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, April 14, 2016, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Whitesides. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newberry County Council on Aging, 1300 Hunt Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
