Clara J. Braswell, age 89, of Newberry, SC passed away at home on Friday, October 20, 2017. Born on March 30, 1928, in Kinards, SC, to the late Andrew and Sula Sanford Johnson, she was the beloved wife of William E. Braswell, Sr.
A member of West End Baptist Church, Clara studied nursing at St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in Jacksonville, FL and taught Sunday School for over 40 years. She loved music and art and enjoyed traveling with her husband in the United States and Europe to view the great works of art.
Clara is survived by her devoted husband, William Braswell; daughters, Jo Carole McCaughrin (Robert) of Newberry and Sandra W. Rogers of Fort Mill, SC; son, William E. Braswell, Jr. of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Carrie Kinley (Jason) of Monroe, NC, Clara Natalea McCaughrin of Newberry, Heather Carol Owens (Jeremiah) of Pooler, GA, Stephanie Lynn Rogers of Charlotte, NC and Anna Claire Braswell of Columbia, SC; and great-grandchildren, Abby, Connor, and Carson Kinley of Monroe, NC. Clara was predeceased by her brothers, Andrew J. and Acie L. Johnson of Newberry.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 22, 2017, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home, 1724 Main Street, Newberry, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. A graveside service, with interment to follow, will be held on Monday, October 23, 2017, at St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery, 228 Jalapa Road, Newberry, at 2:00 pm, officiated by the Rev. Charles Clinton and Rev. Timothy Thompson. Memorials may be made to the Ruth S. Pugh Foundation, a branch of the Newberry County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, 115 Nance Street, Newberry, SC 29108; the Woodyard Fund, c/o Sarah Smith, 412 Backwater Court, Chapin, SC 29036, or the Food Bank of West End Baptist Church, 617 Main Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
Pallbearers are Dr. Mark Davis, John Franklin, Jason Kinley, Tommy Motes, Jeremiah Owens, Danny Rayfield and Jay Verner.
Honorary pallbearers are Mac Bell, Mark Wayne Braswell, Jimmy Braswell, Ralph Braswell, Tim Burton, Ace Johnson, Brooks Johnson, Mickey Johnson, Jamie Wilson, Sam Wooten, John Worthington, and Tanner Worthington.
Clara believed in helping the needy and less fortunate and encouraged her family to do so. She loved all God's gifts: flowers, birds, the starry sky; her beloved family and friends; and most importantly our precious Lord. She herself was a precious gift.
