Clyde Lewis Huffstetler, age 96, was reunited with loved ones in the arms of Jesus on January 18, 2023.
He was born in Chapin, SC in 1926 to the late Elbert Leslie and Leila Wessinger Huffstetler. Clyde loved God, his country and his family, and after serving in the US Army during WWII, he met and married the love of his life, Dorothy Metts Huffstetler, and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. She, along with their children, Gail (Derrill) Cannon, Cathy Boland, Duane (Lisa) Huffstetler and Alan (Tina) Huffstetler will miss him dearly. Also missing their Papa are 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Clyde was a skilled carpenter and supported his family by building many homes in and around Chapin and assisted in building seven churches in the Newberry and Lexington county area. He learned the trade from his father and carried on the business with his brothers, Bernard and Eugene, now deceased. Clyde is also preceded in death by his step-mother, Nancy Pearl Amick Huffstetler, who raised him from the age of twelve when his natural mother died in childbirth; sisters, Freida Shealy, Faye Rose, and Lila Cromer; as well as a granddaughter, Mackenzie Huffstetler and son-in-law, Cal Boland. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, he is also survived by a sister-in-law, Shelva Huffstetler and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Clyde was active in St. Peter Lutheran Church and in his community. He served as Sunday School treasurer, church council member, and choir member. He was also a member of the Fellowship Sunday School class and Primetimers. Clyde was an Assistant Cub Scoutmaster for Troop 380 and was a life member of the Lutheran Men in Mission. He enjoyed watching game shows and sports in his retirement years, especially the Clemson Tigers and the Atlanta Braves.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at 2:00 pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Chapin with Pastor David Tholstrup officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held following the visitation.
