Dr. Charles David Turpin, 66, of Newberry, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on January 29, 1943 in Dayton, OH. He was a professor emeritus of Presbyterian College where he taught Spanish and Portuguese. He was a part-time instructor at Piedmont Technical College. Dr. Turpin received his Masters degree from the University of Arizona and his PHD from the University of New Mexico. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where he was a vestry member. He volunteered for the Newberry County Free Medical Clinic as a translator, a volunteer for the Newberry County Literacy Council and was a board member of the Interfaith Community Services.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Tomlins Turpin; step-sons, Jeffrey Cavanaugh of Miami, FL and Matthew (Christy) Tomlins of Beltsville, MD; step-daughter, Leah Tomlins of Beltsville, MD; a sister, Sandra Dening of Columbus, OH; brothers, Jack Turpin of Chesapeake, MD, James Turpin of Cincinnati, OH and Arthur Turpin of West Carrollton, OH; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Lillard of Newberry; a niece, Lisa Erancato of Newberry
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2009 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Elizabeth Morgan. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, 1605 Main Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
