David Lewis Whitman, 80, of Newberry, died Thursday, June 29, 2017, at his residence.
Born on May 22, 1937, in Newberry County, he was a son of the late John Luther and Clarice Dominick Whitman. He served in the S.C. National Guard and retired as a Captain after 27 ½ years with the Newberry City Fire Department. He also was employed part-time for a number of years with Prosperity Furniture. Mr. Whitman was a devout Christian who was a member of Faith Assembly of God where he formerly served on the church Board and as clerk. He was an avid gardener.
Mr. Whitman was the devoted husband of 60 years to Coritta “Tip” Bundrick Whitman. He is also survived by daughters, Cathy (Mack) Baker of Sumter and Lory Ann (Tim) White of Bryson City, NC; sisters, Joann (Edgar) Fulmer and Edith (Jimmy) McCarthy of Prosperity; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by siblings, Lorraine McCarthy, Johnette Hipp and Elmer Whitman.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, July 1, 2017, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home by the Rev. Edward Rivers and Fire Chief Keith Minick. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:30 pm Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Faith Assembly of God or to the SC State Firefighters' Foundation, PO Box 211725, Columbia, SC 29211.
