Dean Elbert Mayer was born on Sunday, November 5, 1955 in Newberry, SC. He entered heaven on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at home in Little Mountain, SC
Dean was the son of the late Euston Hutto and Lola Young Mayer of Newberry.
In his younger days, Dean was a member of Cub Scout Pack 260, Den 2 and later a Boy Scout in Troop 222, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He and his brother Ralph worked many summers on the Aquatics staff at Camp Old Indian in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many lifelong friends were made during his devotion to the Boy Scouts.
Later he spent six years as an officer with the Newberry Police Department holding badge number 322. This began a career in law enforcement which spanned more than thirty-one years. He served under badge number 216 for seven years on the Boulevard in Myrtle Beach before serving twelve years as the Beach Patrol Supervisor and finally completed his career serving as a detective for six years.
He loved seeing the excitement in children’s eyes, when he frequently took on the role of Santa at Christmas time!
He retired with wife Donna, to his grandmother’s home place in Little Mountain, where he passed away peacefully from complications of cancer.
Dean was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry. SC.
He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Amburn Mayer; a loving daughter, Allison Brooke Mayer Gainey (Tommy) of Sumter and her mother Katharine Rothrock Mayer, to whom Dean was married for six years. He has two wonderful sons, Brandon Dean Mayer of Eastover and Michael Euston Mayer of Prosperity and two brothers, Ralph Hutto Mayer (Jane) of Saluda, NC and Bruce Young Mayer (Kathy) of Sumter. He also had stepdaughters, Jami Cheeks (John), Alison Powell, (Chris) and Meredith Burnett (Brian); grandchildren, Ari Ann Mayer, Makaily Cheeks, Nicholas Wise, Alyxis Cheeks, Courtney Tarvin, Grayson Powell, Ada Grayce Powell, Grady Powell and Analeigh Powell. He has loving nieces, Kelly Elisabeth Mayer (Robbie) of Sumter, Rachel Katharine Mayer of Summerville and Kristen Rose Mayer of Greenville as well as nephews, Matthew Ryan Mayer (Jade) of Port St. Joe, Florida and Jonathan Patrick Mayer of Mills River, NC. He was predeceased by a stepson, Michael Cheeks.
His entire family loved him dearly.
Visitation will be held at McSwain Evans Funeral Home, Tuesday, September 19, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
Memorial services for Dean Elbert Mayer will be held at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer at 11:00 am Wednesday September 20, 2023. The family will have a brief visitation beginning at 10:00 am on Wednesday at the church.
