Donald “Mutt” Stephens, Sr., 85, of Prosperity, died Monday, October 10, 2016, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on May 1, 1931, in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Daniel Gilliam and Bleeka Melton Stephens. He was a Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from Independent Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the Church by the River. Mr. Stephens was a 32 nd Degree Mason of the Prosperity Lodge #115 AFM, a Shriner and a member of the Newberry Moose Lodge. For 30 years he was known for holding his annual community fish fry. Mr. Stephens loved his boat, gardening and being on Lake Murray.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Louise Alexander Stephens; sons, Don (Gaynell) Stephens of Prosperity and Joey (Pat) Stephens of Lugoff; daughters, Angie Stephens (Dean Branham) of Columbia and Wanda (Terry) Puckett of Sandy Run; grandchildren, Michelle (Scott), Donald Alex (Becky), Kelly (Darrel), Marty, Chely and Joel; great-grandchildren, Megan, Trey, Ally, Wallace, Holli, Tiffany, Thomas, and Delaney; four great-great-grandchildren and a number of special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Gay Stephens and Carolyn Zeigler and brothers, Daniel, Frank, Pete, Doc, Joel, Howard and Dale Stephens and two infant brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, October 13, 2016, at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home by Pastor Priscilla Griffith. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
