NEWBERRY – Doratha Minick Schumpert, 86, died June 30, 2017, at Springfield Place. She was born on May 19, 1931 in Newberry, daughter of the late Gary Alonzo and Annie Laura Hawkins Minick.

Mrs. Schumpert was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She was a homemaker and a retired clerk from Rabin’s Shoe Store and Anderson Shoe Store in downtown Newberry. She was a caretaker to her husband and mother for many years.

Mrs. Schumpert was a loving and devoted wife of 63 years to her late husband, Fred Schumpert. Doratha loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved her flowers, working in her yard and caring for the elderly. She also loved garage sales and antique auctions. Doratha had a “chosen sister” Jeanette Lominick Boozer. Doratha was a friend to everyone including her special friends Sara Franklin and Margaret Goggins. She was known to many as “Mama Doe”, “G-ma” and “Dosie”. Doratha is survived by two daughters Frieda Kesler and husband Craig of Newberry; Marsha Thompson of Easley; grandchildren Danielle Little (Sam) of Simpsonville; Haley Stuck of Newberry; Barry Kesler (Abby) of Newberry; Melynda Gunter (John) of Lexington; Tammy Rice (Rusty) of Easley; Bryan Thompson of Beaufort; Jimmy Thompson (Angee) of Easley; Jeannie Schumpert Dias of Simpsonville; Tara Schumpert of Spartanburg; and Michelle Schumpert of Union; nineteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schumpert is also survived by a brother, Clyde “Buck” Minick (Donelle) of Newberry, a sister, Starling Lowman of Chapin and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Schumpert was predeceased by her son Gene Schumpert, a son-in-law Jim Thompson, a sister Johnette M. Harmon and her “chosen son” John Ross. She was also predeceased by her in-laws, Oscar and Bessie Schumpert.

The family will be at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Frieda & Craig Kesler, 1970 Trinity Church Road, Newberry. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, July 3, 2017 at First Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Albert Allen. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 807 Caldwell Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or of one’s choice.

Honorary pallbearers are her First Baptist Sunday School Class, Jeanette Boozer, Sara Franklin, Margaret Goggins, Clarence & Shirley Livingston, Dr. Oscar Lovelace, staff of Springfield Place Unit 4. Active pallbearers are Barry Kesler, Sam Little, John Gunter, Bryan Thompson, Jimmy Thompson, Rusty Rice and Russell Trammell.
