Doris Christine Price, 96, died Saturday, April 27, 2013. She had resided in Newberry, SC, since 1974. She was born in Zanesville, OH, on May 3, 1916, the daughter of Floyd Ellis Granstaff and Helen Jennings Granstaff.
Survivors include: her sons Raymond Leigh Price of Pittsburgh, PA, John Jeffrey Price of Newberry, SC; her daughters Martha Jeane Hoover of Morgantown, WV, Cynthia Ann Price of Gahanna, OH, Patricia Price of Saint Augustine, FL; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; other loving relatives and friends. Mrs. Price was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Lorenzo Eldridge Price: sons Samuel Lorenzo Price and Robert Everett Price; and sisters Hilda Dinan and Jeane Harlan.
Mrs. Price was a founding member of Newberry’s Powerhouse artist group. She was an accomplished artist and miniaturist. Her miniature replica log cabin and her American colonial house were on exhibit at the Newberry-Saluda Public Library for several years to the delight of local children and patrons. She was retired as an Administrative Assistant from the Newberry Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Council.
Her family will remember her life-long love of learning as well as her wit, warmth and wisdom. Her home was a reflection of her many domestic talents including sewing, quilting, knitting and crocheting in which she excelled. Her garden flourished under her care blossoming with each passing season. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have fond memories of their visits to grandma’s home. Her calendar was filled with reminders as to birthdays, anniversaries and family milestones which she rarely failed to acknowledge with a card or a note. She was the glue that held all the various branches of the family together as their lives and adventures took them all over the globe. She was quick to remind them all that no matter how far they traveled and no matter how long their travels kept them away; she would always leave a light on in the window. She was dearly loved and will be truly missed by all her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that you make a donation to the public television station or public library of your choice. No local service is planned and out-of-state funeral arrangements are being made.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Springfield Place J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home for their care during her final illness, to the staff of Angel Care of Newberry for their months of exceptional service that enabled Mrs. Price to reside in her home that she dearly cherished, to Palmetto Health Hospice for their assistance and guidance and to Dr. Corey Hunt and all his staff at Compass Family Medicine for their dedicated years of care.
