Doris Eileen Lightner Cheek, 84, of Newberry, died Monday, May 8, 2017, at her residence.

Born on March 7, 1933, in Paris, OH, she was the daughter of Elmer Everett and Esther Gerhart Lightner. She had worked as a bookkeeper and following retirement she and her husband, J.B., were sanctioned by the North American Mission Board to work with the Campers on Mission. For a period of ten or twelve years she ministered for the Lord by assisting with the establishment of a church in Goshen, IN and sharing Gods word to carnival workers each year at the annual Strawberry Festival in Florida. Upon ultimate retirement to Newberry she joined Glenn Street Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School and the WMU and continued to serve the Lord at every opportunity.

Mrs. Cheek is survived by her husband, John Bynum “J.B.” Cheek; sons, Phil Oakes, Tim Oakes, and Matt Oakes; step-children, Keith Cheek, Kevin Cheek, Amy Cheek, Valerie Cheek-Tucker and Philip Cheek; eight grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Whitesides. The family will receive friends following the service.
