Dorothy Longshore Satterwhite, 100, of Newberry, widow of F. Haynard Satterwhite, died Monday, July 17, 2017 at her residence.
Born on November 1, 1916, in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Wilson Euclydus and Henrietta Morse Longshore. During the first years of her 66 year marriage to Haynard they lived in Joanna. When the war began they both worked for the Navy where she worked testing foreign powders such as TNT and Black Powder comparing them to US produced powders. After the war they moved to Jalapa where they built their home and reared their family.
Mrs. Satterwhite was the oldest member of Bush River Baptist Church where she served as WMU Director for more than twenty years promoting diligently the Missions Program of the church. She served as a Sunday School teacher and also was on the Church Council and Decorating Committee. She was a member of the Nosegay Garden Club and served as the treasurer of the Newberry Council of Garden Clubs. Mrs. Satterwhite is a member of the American Rose Society, South Carolina rose Society and Newberry-Saluda Chapter. She and her late husband grew roses and shared them with friends and neighbors. She was a member and past president of The Bush River Friendship Club.
She retired from the business office at Whitten Center in 1981. She was a member of the South Carolina State Employees Association and served as the president of the Newberry County Chapter three terms. Mrs. Satterwhite served on the State Retiree Board of Directors and in 1999 was named Outstanding Retiree of the Year.
She is survived by a daughter, Judith S. Griffith of Newberry; sons, Francis Gerald “Jerry”(Jeanne) Satterwhite of Sun City Center, FL and Michael W. (Patsy) Satterwhite of Milledgeville, GA; grandchildren, Greg (Lisa) Satterwhite, David (Heather)Satterwhite, Melanie (Aymen) Satterwhite and Lisa Satterwhite; 4 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren . Mrs. Satterwhite was the last surviving sibling of six brothers and sisters and five half-brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Bush River Baptist Church by the Rev. Eric Truesdale. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bush River Baptist Church, 8936 Bush River Road, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will be David Satterwhite, William Satterwhite, Wayne Satterwhite, Kevin Satterwhite, Steve Satterwhite, Keitt Kunkle, and Clyde Suber.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bush River Baptist Church Women's Sunday School Class.
