Dorothy Smith

Dorothy Mabel Adams “Aunt Dot” Smith, 83, of Prosperity, widow of Joseph L. Smith, died Monday, December 26, 2011 , at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Born on April 24, 1928 , in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Leo Thomas and Mabel Alice Reynolds Adams. Her family ran the Adams Fish Camp in the 1930’s & 40’s. Mrs. Smith and her immediate family ran Holiday Acres Marina from 1970 to 1977. She was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church where she helped others as needed. She was a member of Drayton Rutherford Chapter of the UDC. Mrs. Smith was the first runner up in the Miss South Carolina Pageant in 1946. Everyone that knew her always called her “Aunt Dot”. She never met a stranger.

She is survived by a son, William Samuel “Bill” (Kathy) Smith; a daughter, Dorothy M. “Dottie” (Larry) Tolbert both of Prosperity. She leaves four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the last child from a family of ten having been predeceased by sisters, Elizabeth Sineath, Nelva Brown and brothers, Haskell Adams, Raymond Adams, Clyde Adams, Jack Adams, Grady Adams, Alvin Adams and Eugene Adams.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011 , at Macedonia Lutheran Church by the Rev. Randall Derrick. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Rosemont Cemetery . Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Macedonia Lutheran Church Building Fund, 3216 Macedonia Church Road , Prosperity , SC 29127 , Hospice Care of Tri-County, 13795 C.R. Koon Highway , Newberry , SC 29108 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Pallbearers will be Shawn Smith, Chad Tolbert, Trey Tolbert, Doug Adams, Wendel Adams and Chip Adams.
