Dorothy Louise Gaster Knight of Columbia passed away on Monday, March 7, 2011, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born December 23, 1929, in Johnson Township, Williamsburg County, to Ebbie (a farmer) and Ethelyn Wyand (a housewife) Gaster. Dot married Cecil Horger Knight in 1956; they were divorced in 1971. Dot was a long-time member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, SC. As a child, she worked in her parents’ tobacco fields. She graduated from Johnsonville High School and attended Coker College. She then worked at Providence Hospital; and later as a medical transcriptionist for various doctors, retiring from the office of Dr. Eddie M. Williams in the 1990’s. She was known for her accuracy and attention to detail, as well as her vast medical knowledge. She was president of the American Association of Medical Assistants in the 1970’s.
She is survived by a daughter, Melanie Knight; grandcats Ivy, Dino, and Daniel Knight; nephews Paul A. Cannarella, Jr., and Phillip Perry, Jr.; and a niece, Ginger Davis. She is predeceased by her sisters, Martha Mahala Gaster Cannarella and Lila Gaster Davis Perry.
She will be interred in a private ceremony in Old Johnsonville Cemetery, Johnsonville, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations to the SC Progressive Network (PO Box 8325, Columbia, SC 29202 or on-line at www.scpronet.com) are requested.
