Everett McQuerns Hughes, M.D., 79, of Newberry, widower of Marjean Davis Hughes, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at his residence.

Born on January 31, 1935, in Union County, he was a son of the late Everett Holmes and Jean Sanders Hughes.

He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from the Union County School System and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He earned his Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War. After returning from military service, he entered Family Practice of Medicine in West Columbia for several years. He returned to MUSC for a Residency in Radiology. After completing his Residency, he came to Newberry to practice. He was the first full-time Radiologist at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. He was Chairman of Radiology Department for many years and held many medical staff positions, including Chief of Staff.

After his retirement, Dr. Hughes served on the Newberry County Memorial Hospital Board, two years as Chairman. He was an Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology at the U.S.C. School of Medicine in Columbia, and an Adjunct Instructor of Biology at Piedmont Technical College. He was a Diplomat of The American College of Radiology. He was a member of the Newberry County Medical Society, the S.C. Medical Association, the S.C. Radiological Society, and a member of the Southern Medical Society.

Dr. Hughes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newberry. He was an ordained Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a former Rotarian and a former Chairman of the American Cancer Society.

He was an avid horseman and showed horses in his younger years. As he approached retirement, he developed an interest in miniature horses and started Marmack Ranch for breeding and raising miniatures. He was a founding member of Dixieland Miniature Horse Society. He was a member of American Miniature Horse Association and American Miniature Horse Registry.

In 2007, he earned licensure as an Auctioneer. He enjoyed woodworking as he crafted beautiful furniture and other gifts for family and friends. He loved making Christmas special for his kids. His favorite Muppet was Gonzo. He was the best father a son or daughter could ever have.

He is survived by daughters; Margaret Jean (Marcus) Delgato of Tampa, FL, and Mary Legare (Dawson) Cherry of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Michael Sanders (Nikki) Hughes; a grandson, Jack Everett Hughes; and a dear friend, Dawn Catalano.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, August 1, 2014 at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
