M. Edith Hawkins Summer, 86, of Newberry, widow of Everett Summer, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at her residence.

Born on April 4, 1928, in Newberry, she was the daughter of the late Willie Odin and Mary Enid Johnson Hawkins. She was retired from Damon International. Mrs. Summer was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church where she was involved with the Men and Women's Club, the Methodist Women and the Sunday School Class. She and her husband enjoyed traveling across the country with their friends.

She was a very loving and caring mother and mother-in-law with a great sense of humor. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to her.

She is survived by sons, Ralph (Kathy) Summer and Ronnie (Devonna) Summer both of Newberry; a brother, Kemper Hawkins of Newberry who she was extremely close to and enjoyed spending time with; grandchildren, William Summer, Kane Summer and Jennifer (Joey) Long; great-grandchildren, Jerran and Jacksen Long and special caregiver, Veronica Spearman. She was predeceased by a brother, Lewis Hawkins.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, December 4, 2014, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sean Kilpatrick and Rev. Bruce Palmer. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, c/o Joy Bouknight, 1911 Buzhardt Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Will Summer, Kane Summer, Joey Long, Jay Hawkins, Frank Hamm, Brian Summer, Warren Bowers and Mike Bowers.
