Last of her line, native Newberrian Edna Duckett Johnson Kirkegard, age 96, died peacefully at her home in Newberry September 18, 2013. Also known to many as “Miss Edna,” or “The Queen Bee,” Mrs. Kirkegard was born in Newberry June 30, 1917, and was the widow of the late Howard Bach Kirkegard and the daughter of the late Eleanor Irene Duckett Johnson and Pope Duncan Johnson.

A graduate of Coker College in 1939 and a long- time member of Central Methodist Church, Miss Edna was predeceased by her siblings Pope Duncan Johnson, Jr., Mary Wilson Johnson Smith, and Thomas Duckett Johnson.

She leaves behind her three children Karen Bach Kirkegard Wehman (Peter), Eleanor Duckett Kirkegard Linder, and Howard Bach Kirkegard, Jr.; her grand children Allan Prentiss Wehman (Elizabeth), Dr. Michael Jacob Wehman, (Julie),; Mary Edna Linder Kutsherenko (Steven Anthony); Mary Katherine Kirkegard Moore (Carl). She loved all her children, but her great-grandchildren were quite special: Savannah Ann Wehman, Christian Prentiss Wehman; Katherine Ellen Wehman, Michael Jacob Wehman, Jr., Anthony Steven Kutsherenko, Jr., Eleanor Alene Kutsherenko; and Allie Kirk Moore.

Graveside services will be held Friday, September 20, 2013, at Rosemont Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. Tressco Shannon. Memorials may be sent to Central United Methodist Church, PO Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108, or The Newberry Opera House, 1201 McKibben Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
