Euston Hutto Mayer, Jr., of Newberry, died peacefully on September 21, 2016. He was the son of the late Euston Hutto Mayer, Sr. and Edna Shealy Mayer.

Euston was born in Ellicott City, Maryland on July 30, 1930. He married Lola Young in 1951 to whom he was married for 58 years until her death in February 2009. He was employed by the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens Railroad (CN&L, now CSX) for 40 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a featured commentator on an Emmy nominated ETV railroad documentary in 2005 entitled “Steel Roads & Iron Men.” He spoke of the trials and tribulations of railroad work. Fellow railroad employees who worked with Euston, spoke of his honesty and his leadership abilities. Euston, as section foreman, would never ask his men to do any job he wouldn't do himself.

He is survived by a sister, Martha Mayer Hooper of Prosperity; three sons, Ralph H. Mayer of Lexington, Bruce Y. (Kathy) Mayer of Sumter and Dean E. (Donna) Mayer of Prosperity. Euston's grandchildren loved their “Papa Euston” dearly – Matthew (Jade) Mayer, Jonathan Mayer, Kristen Mayer, Allison (Tommy) Gainey, Brandon Mayer, Michael Mayer, Kelly Mayer, Rachel Mayer and great-granddaughter, Addison Elisabeth Mayer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, September 25, 2016, at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where he was a long time member. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the church, 1515 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

The family would like to thank Euston's dear friend, Anne Shealy, Blue Ridge Hospice and Jane Willis for their loving care.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Mayer, Jonathan Mayer, Michael Mayer, Brandon Mayer, Tommy Gainey and Lee Hooper.

Honorary pallbearers will be John and Lib Boland, John Collins, Fred Cummalander and Larry Hooper.
