Evelyn Chalmers

Evelyn Patricia Crowe Chalmers entered into heavenly rest on July 31, 2024. Born May 13, 1937 to the late Clarence Ferber and Margie Sloan Crowe.

Evelyn worked in her early years in a sewing plant, helping put her husband, Jim through Clemson. She received her Certified Nursing Assistant Degree from Piedmont Technical College. Evelyn worked at Newberry County Memorial Hospital,J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home, Saluda Nursing Home, and as a private caregiver. Her gift in life was taking care of others.

Evelyn and Jim owned Chalmers Strawberry Farm for twenty years. She once picked 76 gallons of strawberries in one day. She often said that hoeing and picking cotton and strawberries were the reason for her back pain. Evelyn loved her family. She was happiest when everyone was together. Evelyn and Jim took many trips with her two sisters and their husbands. They loved playing games and laughter was always present.

Evelyn had a beautiful harmony voice, loved music and singing with family. Some of her favorites were Elvis, gospel, country and Grand Ole Opry stars, Bill Monroe, Roy Acuff, and Vince Gill. When it came to racing, Evelyn thought that Richard Petty was the only race car driver in NASCAR.

Evelyn was known as Mama, Grandma Evelyn, Miss Evelyn, Aunt Ebb, and just Ebb to her family. She was an active member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church.

Evelyn is survived by a daughter, Donna (Tim) Shealy; a son, Eddie (Susan) Chalmers; grandchildren, Collin (Kelli Girl) Shealy, Kelli Boy (Alaina) Shealy, Stacy (April) Chalmers, Bryan (Danielle) Chalmers, Rachel (Chris) Nelson; great-grandchildren, Parker, Lorelai, Delilah, Hattie, Merritt, Mason, Presley, Brantley, Bobby, Conner, and Caleb.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Jim Chalmers; and sisters, Juanita Chapman Lewis and Betty Jo Patterson.

A special thanks to the staff of Springfield Place for their friendship and taking care of Evelyn the past two years. Thank you to the doctors and staff at Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont for their kindness, compassion and support.
