Frances Long

Frances Shealy Long, 97, of Newberry, widow of Furman Long , died peacefully Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at her home.

Born June 5, 1926 in Chapin, she was a daughter of the late Cebar Cline and Gerstle Price Shealy.

She and her late husband raised their five children on the family dairy farm. She embraced every element of the outdoors that came with farm life and planted countless vegetable and flower gardens throughout the seasons.  Just weeks before she passed, she spent numerous days sitting on a stool dividing and transplanting roots in her beloved daylilly patch. She also enjoyed a lifelong hobby of sewing and patchwork quilting, always with "old scraps".

She is survived by daughters Shirley Frick of Chapin and Julia Long of Newberry; son Dial Long of Little Mountain;and daughter in law Ledale Long of Newberry.  Grandchildren: Monica Collum of Chapin; Meg Vanderzee (Curt) of Ravena, New York; Michael Freie (Crystal) of Eastover; Kim Crumpton (Kevin) of Little Mountain; Tiffany Dawkins (Wade) of Prosperity; Corey Long (Selena) of Newberry and Josh Long (Jillian) of Little Mountain. Great grandchildren: Briana and Alex Collum; Hannah, Ryan and Allyson Vanderzee; Austin, Matthew, and Mitchell Freie;  Raine and Price Long; Karter and Karsyn Crumpton; Lane and Jordan Moore, Preston Dawkins; Dantzler and Daylen Long, Drake Lucas; Roman, Hudson and Wilder Long.

Mrs. Long was preceeded in death by a daughter Brenda Freie, a son Glenn Long, and a granddaughter Shandon Long.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was also predeceased by siblings Dorothy Haltiwanger, Chloe Epting, Curtis Shealy, Mary Galloway, and Mark Shealy.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 pm Thursday November 30, 2023 at Colony Lutheran Church Cemetery by the Rev. Steve Counts. The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm until the hour of service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Colony Lutheran Church, 48 Colony Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.
