Fred L. Cumalander

Fred Leitzsey Cumalander, 76, of Little Mountain, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at Richland Memorial Hospital just before his tulips from Holland began to bloom.

Known as “The Boss” to family and “Fly” to many, Fred enjoyed boating, fishing, shrimping, traveling and gardening. He was known for hosting family and friend BBQ get-togethers, sharing his love for family recipes, and although he often gave it with a grunt and a grumble, above all else, he enjoyed spending time with those he loved.

Born December 16, 1948, growing up his entire life in Little Mountain, he was the son of the late Josephine and Bunyan Cumalander. Fred was a 1967 graduate of Mid-Carolina High School and served in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1971 with a tour to Vietnam. For the next 40 years, he was a dedicated Engineer with CSX Railroad. After retirement, he continued to attend his CSX Railroad luncheons to share memories of the good ole’ days. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survived by his loving partner of 18 years, Linda Richardson, and his sister, Bobbie Cumalander King (Maxton), who were faithfully by his side and his surviving Aunt, Carolyn Richardson. He is also survived by his nieces, Brandy Frick (Dave), Erica Carter, Jessica Lindler (Jeremy); Linda’s children, Wendy Richardson Clark (Rhett) and Tyler Richardson (Melissa) who were all loved like his own children. He was adored by his 9 great nieces and nephews, Josie, Wes, Eli and Sadie Frick, Houston and Joanie Billingsley, Ada Carter, Keaton and Knowlton Lindler; Linda’s grandchildren Reagan, Ryann and Riley Clark and Jonah Richardson who were all loved like his own grandchildren. He is also survived by many cousins, friends and railroad brothers.

Fred is predeceased by his loving brother, Earl Cumalander, and many Aunts, Uncles, cousins and loved ones.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, February 21, 2025, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Randy Drafts. The family will receive friends following the service in the Trinity Life Center.

Honorary Pallbearers are the CSX Railroad brothers and friends.
