Fred Schumpert, 84, died Monday, March 28, 2011 , at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home after a lengthy illness and being a shut-in for many years. He was born on October 16, 1926 in Newberry, son of the late Jacob Oscar and Bessie Lee Stevens Schumpert.

Mr. Schumpert was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. He was co-owner of Long & Schumpert Grocery & Seafood until his retirement. He was a World War II Veteran Staff Sergeant Battery C 107 th Division and served as a medic. Most of his tour of duty was spent overseas in Korea , the South Pacific, the Philippines and Okinawa . He was a member of the 40 & 8 where he held many offices; a member of the American Legion Post 24 where he also held many offices; and a volunteer fireman for Friendly Fire Department.

Mr. Schumpert is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Doratha Minick Schumpert. Fred loved his family and was a good provider for them as long as his health permitted. He was a loving father and grandfather to two daughters, Marsha Thompson and husband, James of Easley; Frieda Kesler and husband, Craig of Newberry; grandchildren Tammy Rice and husband, Rusty of Easley, Bryan Thompson of Beaufort, Jimmy Thompson and wife, Angee of Easley, Danielle Stuck of Simpsonville, Haley Stuck of Goose Creek, Barry Kesler of Newberry, Melynda Kesler of Lexington, Jeannie Schumpert of Washington, DC, Tara Schumpert of Spartanburg, and Michelle Schumpert of Union; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Schumpert was predeceased by a son, Gene Schumpert.

The family will be at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Frieda & Craig Kesler, 1970 Trinity Church Road , Newberry. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011 at First Baptist Church by the Dr. Ken neth Harmon, Rev. Hugh Bickley and Rev. James Cuttino. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery , Springdale Section. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 6 to 8 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home . In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church , 807 Caldwell Street , Newberry , SC 29108 or Hospice Care of Tri County, 13795 C R Koon Hwy , Newberry , SC 29108 or of one’s choice.

Honorary pallbearers are his First Baptist Sunday School Class; members of Friendly Fire Department; members of American Legion Post 24; members of 40 & 8; and staff of J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home. Active pallbearers are Jimmy Thompson, Bryan Thompson, Barry Kesler, Sam Little, Rusty Rice, Rowdy Rice, John Ross, and Clarence Livingston.

Fred Schumpert of Newberry died Monday, March 28, 2011, at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
