George Wayne “Yankee” Gibson, Sr., 70, of Newberry, died Monday, September 23, 2019 at his residence.
Born on October 31, 1948 in Rockmart, GA, he was a son of the late George Joe and Carolyn Byrd Gibson. He was an Army Veteran serving in the Special Forces as a Green Beret and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Gibson was retired from Kibler's Inc. and a founding member of the Old Time Holiness Mission. He greatly enjoyed playing Santa Claus for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Franklin Gibson; sons, George Wayne (Tamra) Gibson, Jr. of Prosperity, Martin Anthony (Kim) Gibson of Homosassa, FL and Jonathon “Opie” (Amy) Gibson of Newberry; a daughter, Angela (Chris) Broerman of The Colony, TX; a sister, Frauline Jozefiak of China, MI; a brother, James Leonard (Marie) Gibson of Calhoun, GA; grandchildren, Jordan Caverlee, Kayla (Thomas) Miller, Hunter Gibson, Kody (Richard Cody) Jacobs, Holte Gibson, Maidson Broerman, Brittany (Steven) Ahearn, Brandon Blier, Taylor Gibson, Lauren Gibson, John Henry Gibson and Mayson Keen; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Collins, Kenley, Ellie and Abbey.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm Friday, September 27, 2019 at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Josh Parson and Rev. Vernon L. Koon. Burial will military honors will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 2:30 – 3:30 pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 1990 Fordham Drive, Suite 100, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
