Mrs. Gilda Cromer Waites Leitzsey, of Pomaria and later years of Springfield Nursing Home, died May 24, 2013. Born Jan 11, 1935, she was 78 years old. She was the daughter of the late George Gilbert Cromer and Hallie Isabelle Haltiwanger Cromer. She is survived by two daughters and their spouses: Penney Waites Nichols (Billy) of Newberry and Amy Waites Russell (Ricky) of Pomaria. Five grandchildren: Johnathan Jacob Nichols, Benjamin Lee Nichols, LeAnna Lou Cockrell, Jacob Wesley Cockrell, and Jessie Lee Russell. Two step-grandchildren: Christina Nichols Holcombe and Charles Alan Nichols. She was pre deceased by her parents, her first husband Jacob John Waites and second husband John David Leitzsey.
Mrs. Leitzsey was a member of Mt. Pleasant UMC where she served as youth group leader. Starting at the age of 13, she served as pianist and organist for Enoree Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant UMC and New Hope UMC. She sang in numerous churches and led the residents of Unit 4 in music. She was a member of the 50 Plus group. She was a life time member Woodman of the World. She spent 10+ years as the Girl Scout leader for Pomaria Troop 76. Mrs. Leitzsey was self employed for many years raising laying hens and was referred to as the “Egg Lady”. She retired from Old School Manufacturing as a service lady.
Mrs. Leitzsey was a loving, and caring mother, grandmother, and friend who shared with everyone. She enjoyed singing, playing the piano and organ, cross stitching, word search puzzles, cooking and preparing food for her family and neighbors. She was the “keeper of the flock”. She spent the past 9 ½ years at Springfield Place Nursing Home. During much of her time there, she watched over the other patients when they needed her.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Leitzsey will be held Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be Saturday, May 25, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McSwain Evans Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Newberry Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Pomaria Rescue Squad, Consolidated Fire Dept. or Newberry Rescue Squad.
Active pallbearers are Dale Cromer, Dan Graham, David Haltiwanger, Jay Harley, James Loging, Scott Lominick, Dean Long, Kevin Morris, and Joel Yarborough. The family will be located at 3259 College Street, Newberry, SC.
