Harry “Dusty” Glenn Rhodes Sr., 87, of Prosperity, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Saluda Nursing Center.

Born on October 11, 1921 in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Walton Anthony and Vermelle Blackmon Rhodes. He served in the US Navy as a 2 nd Class Torpedoman on the USS Sterrett during World War II. He was wounded on November 13, 1942 in the Battle of Guadalcanal and received the Purple Heart. He graduated Clemson Agriculture College in 1948 with a degree in Agriculture Engineering. Mr. Rhodes retired from the Newberry County School System as an Agriculture Teacher. He was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Prosperity Civitan Club, the Prosperity Lions Club, the Rotary Club, a volunteer with the Prosperity Rescue Squad, a member of the American Legion and the Retired Teacher’s Association.

Surviving are a son, Harry (Belinda) Glenn Rhodes, Jr. of Prosperity; a daughter-in-law, Patty Rhodes of Greenville; grandchildren, Glenn Alexander Rhodes, Sarah Chapman and Katherine Davis. Mr. Rhodes was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Ovileen Hutchinson Rhodes; a son, Nelson Keith Rhodes, six sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Turner. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wightman United Methodist Church, PO Box 376, Prosperity, SC 29127.
