Hollis Harmon, age 86, of Newberry, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at his home.
He was born on February 6, 1935 in Lexington County, South Carolina. He has been a longtime resident of Newberry, South Carolina but also spent several years in Arlington, Texas. Hollis graduated from Newberry High School in 1953. There he participated in the Paper Bowl in 1952 as a member of the football team. He retired from the civil service and was a salesman for many years. Hollis had an unwavering faith in God and was a member of Lewis Memorial Church. Golfing, camping, traveling, and spending time with his family brought Hollis great joy. Hollis was an avid Carolina Gamecock fan.
He is survived by his son, Keith (Tammy) Harmon, daughter-in-law, Dianne Harmon, three grandsons Wyman (Katie) Harmon, Jesse (Brooke) Harmon and Jared Harmon and his beloved great granddaughter Mila Harmon. Hollis is also survived by friends, relatives, and step-children whom he loved dearly.
Hollis was predeceased by his mother Mary Poole Harmon, father Kimbell Harmon, stepmother Ruby Harmon, his wife Betty Sturkie Harmon and his longtime companion Marie Nobles. Hollis was also predeceased by his son Wyman (Dianne) Harmon and step-daughter, Betty Ann Fares.
Funeral services will be held at McSwain Evans Funeral Home Chapel, 1724 Main Street, Newberry SC 29108, on Wednesday March 17, 2021 at 11:00 am by the Rev. Jimmy Counts. Interment will be held at Newberry Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place
Memphis, TN 38105.
Active pallbearers will be Jerry Busby, Will Nobles, Rick Dobson, Bobby Phillips, Randall Renwick and Timothy Cogdell.
All attending are encouraged to follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks.
