Horace Drayton "H.D." Carter

H.D. Carter passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025 at the age of 90 surrounded by his family.

H.D. was born on July 28, 1934, in Great Falls, SC. He was married for 65 wonderful years to the love of his life, Faye Carter. Together they raised three children: Steve Carter (wife Melissa), Kimberly Carter McDonald (husband Scott), and Sherri Carter Shealy (husband Jeff). HD was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, including his beloved great-grandson Easton, who preceded him in death.

H.D. proudly served his country in the United States Air Force following high school, dedicating four years before beginning a 30-year career as a South Carolina Highway Patrolman, where he met his wife while conducting a traffic stop to inspect her vehicle. Faye carries the traffic citation in her wallet to this day! In addition to being a huge fan and attending many Gamecock football and basketball games, he also enjoyed officiating many baseball games as an umpire for the South Carolina Gamecocks. H.D. volunteered as a coach and mentor for multiple recreational sports in Lexington. After retirement, he owned and operated The Snack Bar at Lexington Country Club, where he was surrounded by the game he loved most, golf. H.D. was a jack of all trades. He loved cooking, wood-working and proudly making furniture such as porch swings and cradles for his children and grandchildren. He could almost always be found outside in his lawn chair soaking up the sun, refilling his bird feeders, building new bird houses, gardening and landscaping.

He will be remembered best for his gift of story telling and his love for his family.

He was predeceased by his Parents Humphries D. Carter and Flossie Teague Carter, brothers Kenneth and Hansel “Bunky”Carter and sister Hazel. He is survived by his sister Geraldine Rollins.
