Inez Stephens

Inez Abrams Stephens, 97, of Newberry, widow of George E. Stephens, died Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Springfield Place.

Born on June 27, 1920, in Newberry, she was a daughter of the Oscar H. and Phoebe Reagin Abrams. Mrs. Stephens attended Winthrop College and taught first grade for three years in Hickory Tavern and then worked for three years at the Navy Department in Washington, DC. Upon her return to Newberry she worked for thirty-five years at Newberry Electric Cooperative from which she retired. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she had been a choir member and a Sunday School teacher. She was an avid Clemson and Atlanta Braves fan.

Mrs. Stephens is survived by four nieces and three nephews. She was predeceased by all of her siblings.

Memorials services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Albert Allen. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1020 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

The family would like to acknowledge the special caregivers, Sandy Senn, Dale Rikard, Newberry Internal Medicine and Springfield Place, for their compassionate care that they gave Mrs. Stephens.
