Irene Wicker Smith

Irene Wicker Smith 93, of Newberry, died peacefully, August 25, 2022 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born on February 6, 1929 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late George and Florence Cannon Wicker.

She was a homemaker and was a very active member of St. Philip's Lutheran Church for as long as her health allowed. She was a member of the Adult B Sunday School Class, the Joy Fellowship, and did the Cradle Roll for many years at St. Philip's. In her younger years, she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She loved working with flowers and in her garden. She loved going to church and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Doris Worthy, Libby Farr (Wayne), Virgil Smith (Susan), A.P. Smith (Tina); and Roger Dean Smith (Myra); a daughter-in-law, Sandra Smith; grandchildren, Wanda Livingston (Travis), Christy Brown (Michael), Valerie Warrington (Larry), Gerald Farr, Shelly Smith (Colton), Laurel Tahon (Dennis), Annie Amick (Ben), Nathan Smith (Lexi), Brandon Smith (Hannah), Jennifer Kingsmore (Devin), Christina Smith (Jonathan), Clay Taylor (Julenne), and D.J. Wilson (Elizabeth); 16 great-grandchildren with one on the way; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Backman Leroy Smith; a son, Calvin B. Smith; a son-in-law, Thomas “Butterball” Worthy; a daughter-in-law, Faye Smith; brothers, Jake, Willie “Bob”, and Clarence Wicker; sisters, Mary Smith and Frances Wicker.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 PM, Monday, August 29, 2022 at St. Philip's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Terry Amick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home from 6:00 until 7:30 PM. Memorials may be made to St. Philip's Lutheran Church Improvement Fund, 2461 St. Philip's Church Road, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pall bearers will be Gerald Farr, Nathan Smith, Brandon Smith, Clay Taylor, Brady Livingston, Ryan Livingston, Euston Farr, Luther Worthy, Waylin Brown, and Devin Kingsmore.

Honorary pall bearers will be the Adult B Sunday School Class, the Joy Fellowship, Bill and Lynn Peterson, Jim Braswell, Patty Ruff, Phil and Cynthia Frick, Allen Worthy and Lorie Amick.
