Jack Osborne Goree, 79, of Newberry, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on December 10, 1931, in Newberry, he was a son of the late O.S. “Bub” and Lillie Johnson Goree. He was retired from the S.C. National Guard and the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Goree was a member of College Street Baptist Church where he sang in the church choir. He played in the National Guard Band, was a leader of Boy Scout Troop #69 for many years and was a member of the Newberry Exchange Club of which he had served as a former president.
He is survived by his wife, Virgie Moore Goree; step-daughters, Cathy (Wayne) Mitchell of Newberry and Donna (Tommy) Bumgardner of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; sisters, Lou (Art) Collier of Lancaster and Doris Mohler of Newberry; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; four nieces and a nephew. Mr. Goree was predeceased by brothers, James Edward Goree, Billy Goree, Furman Goree, Irby Goree and Virgil Goree.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 8, 2011, at College Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Ferrell. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to College Street Baptist Church, 3240 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
