Jackie Perry

Jacqueline Lathrop “Jackie” Perry, 75, of Newberry, died Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at her home.

Born in Newberry on February 12, 1949, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Margaret Crumpton Lathrop.  She was a graduate of Newberry High School.  She earned an Early Childhood degree from Winthrop University and a Master’s Degree from Clemson University.

Mrs. Perry taught school for 34 years.  Most of her years were at Speers Street Elementary School where she touched the lives of many children.  She received “Teacher of the Year” three times while at Speers Street School. Her love for children was unmatched.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was very active. She loved her church.  For many years she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served on many committees.

For over 5 years she battled cancer with faith and dignity, but through it all, she always thought of others before herself. Her favorite bible verse during that time was Matthew 19:26 “With God all things are possible.”

There were several things that meant a lot to her. As noted, her church was very important part of her life. Her family meant more than anything to her --- the birthday celebrations and the yearly beach trips just to name a couple of things that she shared with her family.  She was an active, loving, and caring grandma and always supported her grandchildren by attending baseball games for Jack and Luke, softball and basketball games for Bristol and dance recitals for Dakota.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard W. “Ricky” Perry; a son, Drew (Katie) Perry; a daughter, Nikki (Mike) Hughes and four wonderful grandchildren, Dakota and Bristol Perry and Jack and Luke Hughes.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, May 24, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church by Pastor Dawn Rister and Pastor Jeff O’Dell.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm in the church fellowship hall on Friday.

Active pallbearers will be Kevin Crumpton, Kip Wilson, Russell Hendrix, Edwin Williams, Gregg Clary and Stan Humphries.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2496 SC Highway 773, Pomaria, SC 29126, or to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 269 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
